General Dentist here from Houston lol...Been out of school for four years and now, and wanting to pursue a career in oral surgery. I will be applying this upcoming cycle for 2013 and was wondering if anyone knew anything about Detroit Mercy's OMS program. From what I heard while I was in school its pretty broad scope. If anyone else can shed some light on this program, I'd appreciate it.

Detroit Mercy is the dental school - no OMS program, but I hear they are starting an internship at the school for one year.

The OMS programs in Detroit are Receiving and St. Johns. Don't confuse those with the dental school.

is this common...to have an internship with no attached residency? seems like the internship would be awful

I heard that they will start a brand new program , starting in 2013.

St. John's covers the outpatient OMFS clinic for Detroit Mercy. They are going to combine the two programs in the next few years. Expect to drive a lot. All the hospitals are pretty spread apart. On the flip side, you operate a lot. Look at their case numbers, they are pretty damn near the to of the nation. Broad scope as well.
