I know there are a bunch of loupe threads so bear with me. this question is a little more specific.

So I have decided to buy DFV loupes but I am debating between the 3.5 expanded and the 3.5 standard field. Is the expanded field worth the extra $600 (and extra unsightliness)? I dont see the necessity, besides acclamation purposes, to be able to see the whole arch when I will only be working on 1 tooth. Do the prism optics increase overall magnification quality? How is the 3.5 ex with and without a light compared to the 3.5 st?

Thank you with any advice!

get the ef and dont look back. Light will only make things easier. Get one from lumadent.

Quality glass is quality class. You probably wouldn't know right away, but it is definitely worth it. The expanded field will let you see the entire arch. Without EF, you're lucky to see a quadrant. The price is negligible if you use them throughout your career.

I can promise you will not have any regrets if you go with the ef. 👍

Chalk up another for the EF. It's worth it.

What frames did you get with the expanded field? Do the Yeomen frames (are those the same as the "buddy holly's" as everyone calls them?), compared to the Nike Revolve or Nike Curvew, support the 3.5 expanded field and light better? I just think that the 3.5ef will be heavier and would need a more sturdy frame to adequately support the additional, albeit small, weight. I appreciate any insight!

I got the 3.5 SF Curfew with a light, and a friend got the 3.5 EF with the Yoeman and light. I can see 4-5 teeth, and it doesn't really bother me at all, if I need to see big picture I just look over the top. That said, my friend loves his, but says they're heavy as hell (note, he has a huge prescription, so he could only get the yoeman). Also, I've looked through 3.5 EF without the light, and it does get pretty dark, so if you do go with EF, you'll need the light. One note, my friend has a Navy Scholarship, so he only had to pay 800 for his loupes and light.

In some respects, I'd say that the light is actually more useful than the loupes!

If you don't need to have a prescription built in, I'd say to look at the new Nike plastic frames that they have, they're incredibly light, and really stick on your head.

Might be able to get by with the less heavy duty but the rep said they bend after a few years.

The buddy holly's you could run over with a forklift and they'd still be ok. 👍

Another vote for the EFs. I use DFV 4.5 EF with the DayLite mini and love them!

how much can you see with the DFV 4.5x EF? Is it pretty close to the full mouth? I'm not to certain if I want to go 2.5 and upgrade before the trial period is over and go with 3.5 or 4.5

I wouldn't waste your time with 2.5x.

What did the 4.5 efx run?

4.5ef, i can see 3rd molar to centra through 1 occular. Basically see half arch. 3.5 ef you get to see entire arch. price when i bought mine (2 months a go) was 1500 for 3.5 or 4.5.

think i ll go to 6.0 after using 4.5 a few years 😛

Well the 3.5x ef were 1500 w/o a light 1895 with. I didnt ask about the 4.5. Do you think that would be too much for a 1st year? Or not practical enough yet?

Hell, while you are at it, just spring for the endo microscope and Hubble telescope!

I started with a 2.5 flip-ups w/o a light and upgraded to the 4.5EF TTL with light 3 years later. If I had to do it over again, I'd start with the 3.5

Is it necessary to have an EF for general dentistry and for when we are doing pre-clinic as well? I am just trying to justify the extra money for EF

Are you buying the loupes just for preclinic?

I wouldn't buy anything without the expanded field. It's really nice to see the entire arch. Well worth the upgrade.

Well no, I will use them for the rest of my life hopefully! I was just talking to my pops yesterday as he is down at the ADA convention. We got to talking about loupes and lights. He Was trying to figure out why EF would be necessary for practice? I think he is just old personally has had the same set of DFV loupes for 20 years. He is getting a light though, told him to go with Lumadent 🙂. So I guess my real question is the EF really needed or is just nice to be able to see the entire arch? Or more specifically, when in practice would it be practical?

Sorry if this doesn't make any sense, we have our biochem midterm tomorrow... So shoot me

I am wondering the same thing. Ok so you can see the whole arch. Usually I prep one tooth at a time so who cares if I can see the whole arch..?

I'll answer my own question.. For prepping bridgework when you want to view path of draw!

Closure:

Meeting with the DFV rep Tuesday. Decided to go 3.5EF in buddy holly frames with the ultrilight optics headlight.

Thanks for the input!

Quick Question.

Thanks
