Hey all, I'm transitioning from being a pharm tech to EMS, with the eventual goal of being an MD.

25 currently, and looking for schools around DFW to finish my bachelors (Have an associates in biology). Any recommendations?

I'm looking at UTA at the moment, their biological chemistry BS program. Leaning more toward chem as my undergrad major.

Also, if any of you other nontrads from the DFW area want to drop by the thread and say hi, you're more than welcome 🙂

Hey, I'm originally from Arlington. I saw the Cowboy's stadium getting built from the ground up every day going to work! The consensus here is to go to a year uni and pick the cheapest. I know two people that have been accepted to UTSW from Arlington, with a third going to Baylor Medical School. Are you relocating? Arlington is located right between Dallas/Fort Worth, close enough to everything for you to commute a bit if you have to (30 mins to get to UTSW and Parkland Hospital from UTA). I know of UNT, TWU, and UTD and out of those 3, UTA is the most convenient for living, playing, and schooling.

WHEN I get accepted into UTSW, I will be commuting to UTSW from Arlington.

Yep. Relocating from Paris, TX. About an hour and a half or so away, so nothing major. Looking at living in the Grand Prairie area and commuting to UTA.

And I'm looking at UTSW for med school as my first choice, and I'd heard good things about UTA and UTD both in that respect.

Arlington has many surrounding local hospitals for you to volunteer/work. I live on the border of Arlington/GP. You'll enjoy your stay at either cities, very suburban-y feel vs Houston.

Hi! I live in Dallas and hope to attend UTSW as well. I don't really have anything of substance to add about UTA. Just wanted to say "hi!"

Houston was my second choice, but I didn't want to go through all the crazy admissions process for Rice as a nontrad. That and the Houston traffic? Psssshhhhh. I'll take my chances around Dallas. At least I'm somewhat familiar with that 😛

And hello! If we can get enough of us older guys together, we might have to start a support group lol.

Don't consider Houston unless you got family here where you can live with, cost of living here is very high. It's a very urban place to be (4th biggest metropolitan city in the USA), and the the universities are in the center of it all. Traffic isn't that bad, just avoid the rush hour times and you'll be straight.

I have a feeling I'll be hitting the books pretty hard all day every day, so I'm not planning on working my schedule around the nightlife 😛

I'm at UNT, although I commute... I looked at going to UTA and UTD, but wound up going back to UNT (after my associate's) because it was the cheapest. UTD has the best science program though out of the three. I don't really know much about UTA, but I didn't want to commute there. I live close to UTD but decided against it with money and being a Sociology/International Studies major rather than life science.

I'm hoping to go to UTSW too, should be fun applying!

I did my post-bacc work at UTD and was very happy with it. I felt that it prepared me well for my first year of med school and it has a good rep with the Texas med schools.

Insane cost of living and Houston do not go together. Not sure where that information is coming from. I rented a 3 bedroom house 5 minutes away from downtown for $1100 a month. I currently live in the Northeast where my one room is $700. If you live in Montrose or rent a room in Rice Village near the medical center it is TOTALLY affordable. Just need to know where to look.

I am currently finishing my BS in biology at UTA.

UTA is a pretty strong science and engineering school, and there are some courses that are considered "weed out" courses, but this will likely be the same anywhere you go.

I did most of my lower level sciences at TCC and had no problem transferring them to UTA. The articulation agreement is pretty slick, so transferring was no issue at all.

I will also add that I am very satisfied with my UTA advisor. She is spot on. She really helped get my academic planning squared away and filled in the gaps for me where my research had fallen short.

All in all I would say I am satisfied with UTA. Flat rate tuition is around $4,500 for 12-18 hours. This is about the average for UNT, UTD, or UTA, and obviously CONSIDERABLY less expensive than TCU or SMU.

PM me some time if you want more info. You and I have a nearly identical profile (mid 20's, paramedic, non trad applicant, etc.) although I am primarily interested in UNT. I did work at Children's for a few years on their flight team and still have a few contacts over at UTSW if your ever looking for some shadowing or whatever.

Actually debating not finishing EMS and going straight back to school. The courses don't start until fall, so at least I'm not dropping. 😛

And its funny you should say that, actually. This morning I was looking into UTA vs. TCU. I can probably get a pretty good need based scholarship to TCU. If cost weren't an issue (and yeah, even for me, it likely will be), TCU or UTA?
