For the sake of all of us getting ready to fill out the AMCAS starting this next week, I would like to hear from anyone who has had their application edited or returned after submitting it. If so, what was changed or what did you have to fix? Do you know how it affected you? (ie x weeks longer to get verified, interviewer/admission mentioned change as negative, etc) Thanks a bunch!

I kinda screwed up my class section -- about 1/3 of the classes I listed were edited, some heavily. It didn't appear to slow down my app cycle or affect my admissions anywhere. At least, I hope not!

What are some common mistakes to watch out for? Do most people that don't get verified just record the class names/numbers wrong?

You'll soon learn that there are a bunch of rules on how to fill in the course section of the amcas. Common mistakes: it's really tedious, especially if you attended more than one school and/or had the quarter system, so typos are common; not marking the class in the right category; filling out AP or foreign coursework; incorrect term i.e. Summer is supposed to be listed as the year before or something wacky, etc.

It sounds easy, but like I said, there are a bunch of rules. Just do your best to follow them. I had four corrections on mine and I went over it like half a dozen times. It doesn't matter in the end.

Oh, and mine was still verified in four days.

AMCAS actually f-d up my application. They "fixed" my course section and it really changed my GPA. If it hadn't done that, I might not have caught the mistake. They actually gave me a "P" for a course I had a B in (why, I will never know) and also screwed up a number of other courses (changed the number of credits associated with some courses, etc).

BTW-- I entered things correctly!! I had to write a letter of appeal to request a change ("reverification")... waited another week and a half for them to fix things, then took a few hours to go over everything carefully. It was their fault and they did fix things without questioning me, but I laid out the problems point by point. I think my trancsript checker was out late the night before!!

Warning to those of you who aren't as anal (or is it just OCD??) as I was:
Submit EARLY. I submitted as soon as the option was there to do so (had filled it out and proofed it long before then). If you get it in then, you run a better chance of a quick verification process and the chance to get a reverification if they make a mistake before the bulk of people submit.

Warning #2 is just to print it out and go over the verified version and your submitted version side by side to make sure everything is OK. Be sure to check the GPA-- they put two physics courses I took into non-BCPM GPA (eh????!!!). Like I said, they are just people... people who go out drinking the night before...
🙂

for the engineers,

have there been cases where although you listed many of your engineering courses under bcpm, they changed them to non bcpm? If so, were you able to appeal that decision?

Mine was edited because I didn't include a transcript for the college where I took an AP class in high school. Because I never even stepped onto that college campus I didn't realize I'd need a transcript from there.
It slowed me down a while because I had to wait for the transcript to arrive and then for them to reprocess it.

I have AP Calc credit from high school, so do we have to submit our high school transcript too? Do we have to type in all our high school and undergad classes???

No, the only reason I had to do so is because I recieved college credit from the host college for the course. I needed to have a transcript from the host college.

There is a symbol that AMCAS uses to show a correction they made. I was really careful with mine but still made about 3 mistakes. When I was at an interview I saw the school's copy of my application and noticed that they had the symbol on their copy. My point is, don't be too hasty to submit. Make sure you didn't make any mistakes when entering/classifying courses because the schools can see your mistakes. It probably isn't going to make or break your application but just something to keep in mind.

last cycle, I only listed the engineering courses which were science related courses and didnt have any prob...

Hmm, I wonder if there would be any problem in picking and choosing with the sciencey engineering courses (ie. "bioengineering physical chemistry") that one did well in and ones that were bad?

What did you consider a science-related engineering course? I thought all engineering courses had their own category on AMCAS....

As an EE, I somehow doubt I could get away with listing any of those as BCPM.

I came into undergrad with 23 AP credits...that was a little confusing to list. So I was technically a junior (according to how they define junior) half way through my sophomore yr....so I listed my spring semester of sophomore yr as a junior (i had over 60 credits by then) but they changed it back to sophomore...I still don't understand why. Whatever...I got into 2 med schools so I'm happy.

I dont think you can do that otherwise you stand the risk of them editing/returning the app, which can cause additional unnecessarily time delay in your app...

Agreed most of engineering classes cant be put with science, because they have their own category. However, there are classes for example, a biochemistry class which is exactly what science majors take in our school, but just labeled under our department hence constituting a BCPM class...I hope it makes sense

So what would people say about Pathophysiology?? It is listed under the nursing department, but it is clearly Bio isn't it??

Anyone know?

So is there anyone here who listed engineering courses under bcpm but then was changed by AMCAS?

Yup, makes sense.

I put some engineering courses in BCPM and some in Engineering. None were changed by AMCAS. Incidentally, I put all my EE courses in BCPM. My application went right through with no delays.

Oh, I remember the frustration ALL TOO WELL.

AMCAS said I was missing a transcript - which was completely bogus. I went to 3 undergrad colleges in total. One transcript had a reference of another school - which turned out to be a seminary class that gave me 1/2 a credit for religion at that school - but wouldn't typically be considered college credit anywhere else. AMCAS wouldn't even look at my application again until they got an official transcript - which this seminary didn't even offer - AND of course, it was summer - and everyone from that place was gone. Luckily, with some digging, I found the secretary - and I explained the whole situation about medical school, timelines, and my stress level. What a nice lady, she got a hold of the director, and they sent in a nice certified letter explaining all this to AMCAS and well after a month after submission, my application was finally verified...

Not sure how it affected my interviews - I had an incredible season. Good luck, everyone!

Yes, any class that has anything to do with BCPM can be considered BCPM regardless of the call sign. A common one is biological psychology, which is listed as psych but can be claimed as BCPM.

Yep. I had this exact course in undergrad... and it went to BCPM.

That's what I thought too. I'm Engineering Science and I thought all the engineering classes got listed elsewhere.

does anyone know if you can list nutrional sciences course under BCMP? For example Nutrition and Life cycle or community nutirition? thanks
