mention why osteopathic medicine in their aacomas personal statement? I didn't because I thought it would be better to do so on my secondary application. Do DO schools make their decisions whether or not you get a secondary application based on your aacomas personal statement or is it strictly numbers? Thanks in advance.

I honestly think secondaries are a revenue builder. I think if you more or less have minimum requirements of GPA and MCAT you get one. I don't think they have too much time to read thousands of essays to screen in that manner.

I also think the general consensus on this forum is to wait untill secondaries for explaining "why DO". Nearly every secondary asks this...save the good thoughts for them.

That's what I did, too. I don't think either of the schools who have sent me secondaries so far (OSU-COM and TCOM) screen anyway, based on how fast I got secondary invites.

not ALWAYS...nycom sends secondary application with their interview invites...they dont invite too many applicants so i doubt its a big revenue builder for them...but we all know it costs 3 cents to make a secondary application and the amount of time someone spends reading it (2minutes), even if you hired a person to specifically do that (we all know the already paid adcom reads them), they would be getting a lot of money .... in the case of nycom at $60 per secondary, even if they only read 20 per hour thats 1200 bucks! ...basically i think they invite 600 or so to interview...this comes out to about 36,000 dollars ...judging by the lunch they serve, i hope they are spending the bulk of that 36k on the orientation activities ect...other schools charge upwards of 120 dollars per applicant and sometimes dont even give you an interview..thats a total rip! 😱

Thank you all guys and gals for responding. I was starting to worry since there has been so many posts lately that seems to indicate that most put the why DO statement in their aacomas personal statement. Again, very much appreciated!

So, what is the main consensus? I have two essays written and feel that my MD essay will make more of an impact the first time around for DO schools as well. I wanted to wait for secondaries (if any) to give my experiences as to why DO is for me. What do you guys think?

Sounds like a plan. I've recently begun wondering if schools even read the primary essay. Too many ask the exact same questions on the secondary, so I think they may just get your name, address, and some numbers (maybe not even that, I've repeated my transcript and MCAT on many secondaries) from the primary.

I actually forgot to paste my essay into my AACOM app. 😳 Most of the schools didn't even notice. The ones that did asked me to send them a copy before they offered me an interview.

I guess my point is, the essay probably doesn't matter as much as the one on the secondary.

absolutely...once you start writing a ton of secondaries...there are only so many ways to express your dying devotion to osteopathy.

Don't drain your ideas on the PS.

yes..agree...I don't think they look at AACOMAS essays until interview/post interview decisions. I mean they might skim them, check GPA, check MCAT...then be like "okay give them a secondary!"

wo which DO schools screen their applicants before sending secondaries? 😕

Touro does, but I think it is more a screening of your grades/MCAT.
WVSOM sends a secondary only if you are invited to interview. I think NYCOM is the same.

i did NOT mention it in my PS. It sorta sounded generic...I feel bad saying that but I have to think I'm not the only one there. I'll of course think of something compelling to add in the secondaries 🙂

I think most of them do...but it would be at the lowest low of the cut off scale...whatever that might be
