i looked up NYCOM... and it doesnt look too good. all the scores were average or below and people had some crappy things to say... i cant say when this survey was done, as i know there have been some changes going on there recently.
it freaked me out slightly b/c nycom is my only interview thus far...
but i know a 4th year there who loves it, so its sort of balancing out. and i know that med school is what you make it, and there are always going to be people that hate on life and where they are at... so i always take these things with a grain of salt.

anyone want to comment on the survery results?
also, do they have AOA (the honor society) or is that only for MDs? do they have any other recognition-type things? their website is sooo unhelpful....

thanks peeps 🙂

oh and feel free to look up your school of choice 😛

If you have ever taken statistics you will rememeber that every survey is only the opinions of those who chose to answer the questions. Perhaps only disgruntled students took the time to answer the questions.

I would post this link in DO med student forum and ask the students from there what their opinion is of their school. Maybe you will find out something different.

Thanks for the link Chrisobean. I'll definitely interpret with caution....👍

One of the comments did specify that they just got a new president, which happened a while ago now (2002?), so it's probably at least a couple of years old. It seems that a lot has changed since Dr. Ross-Lee became Dean. I'm guessing things will continue to change for the better (nothing is ever perfect 🙂).

One of the comments said that the person "thought they should have gone somewhere else" i.e. disgruntle. Also, if you look at the standard deviation, most of the responses are either average or above average. Not to mention that the sample size is way way way too small (4 out of approximately 1000) for any real conclusions to be drawn.

yeah i know all the responders sound cranky in that survey. but still, its disheartening to see how unhappy some people are at their school.

I keep getting an error message when the nycom survey page loads. Cant read it.

But, I'm a nycom third year....and do remember reading a nycom survey on that site a few years ago and it wasnt very complimentary. I imagine it was the same one, because I remember the talk about a new president.....hence the thing is probably pretty old. If they are indeed talking about a new president, they brought a new president in about 4 years ago and a new dean in about 2 years ago.

Also, realize that the few disgruntled folks are much more motivated to go out there and tell the world about the ways they were "wronged" than the perfectly happy, content students. Hell, the same disgruntled student is welcome to fill out 4 different evaluations I assume, so take these things with a grain of salt. Talk to current students, recent graduates. Stay away from the nycom website, it's a horror and they know it. A new one is supposedly being designed right now and they've all but abandoned the current one.

Feel free to PM me if you have specific Q's...

oceandoc,

Can you tell us some positive things about NYCOM? How were years 1 and 2? How's year 3 treating you?

Thank you!

PH

It does seem that those surveys are old, because I can't find one for VCOM. Plus, it mentions the old UHS curriculum instead of the "new" genesis one.

The most current information I get is from SDN and by emailing the schools.

I have had a few of my friends go to NYCOM and graduate and LOVED it. They said they had awesome rotations and one of them is now a resident in NYC in EM.

Whats funny is even with all that I didn't apply to NYCOM cause I didn't want to move back north...I hate the cold. Looking back I would have like the chance to at least vist the school and see whats its about.

I seem to be the frequent nycom cheerleader on here, hence you can probably do a search for some more info... but I like nycom because it fits what I wanted in a school. No school is right for everyone. No school is perfect. I think I'm getting a great education and I realize that med school is mostly what you make out of it, no matter where you go. Some things I think are better here than elsewhere, in my humble opinion:
1) Technology- You wouldnt believe it from nycom's horrible website that's supposedly being redone, but they do throw alot of cash into technology here. Most classes are taped and put streaming online so you can watch/review them later. Makes getting out of bed for the 8am lecture hard, but an awesome tool none-the-less. Campus is wireless. You can check-out laptops to use from the library. A new robotic-patient simulator lab is being built.
2) Rotations- Probably the best of the D.O. world, much having to do with being in NY. Some decent hospitals under the umbrella affiliations of Cornell, Yale, Columbia, Mt. Sinai, UB, Stonybrook, etc. We rotate shoulder to shoulder with these students and have no problem outshining them often. Also, we're not shipped all over the country for rotations like many D.O. students are forced into. 80% of our rotations are in the metro NY area, with a few upstate and in Buffalo for the students who want to get out of the city and rotate up there.
3) Student Life- they go out of their way to expose students to the profession... the school took like 250 students to the AOA Convention in new orleans last fall, 180 to vegas the year before that. Good times. No other school brought more than 20 students...
4) Board prep time- I think nycom gets more than any other D.O. school, about 5-6 weeks to study before Step I. I dont know the board pass rate, I think it's between 91-93%, but I know of many people who got above a 90%.
5)Match list- I havent seen a D.O. school with a better match list recently. Last year's list for nycom is on this site somewhere....
6) Responsive administration- the Deans meet with students weekly to elicit feedback, at attempt to address most concerns is usually encountered. Dean Ross-Lee is an impressive leader.

First year and second year are basically the same at any school. Some schools have attendance policies, nycom encourages you to come to class... but actually enables you to watch most lectures from home if you want... most still goes to class though. Labs are mandatory. Testing is in blocks, hence life and stress are cyclical. IMO, it beats having a test every monday like some schools... although blocks suck, it's better than studying every single weekend.

Third year has 6 core rotations... 12 weeks of surgery and medicine and 6 weeks each of peds, Ob/gyn/ psych, and FP. Less studying and more structured, mandatory hours. Similar amount of sleep as 1st/2nd years; Rotation requirements and call schedule determine free time, surgery and Ob/gyn have historically the worst schedules.

Downsides: cost of living is very high; Some say large class size, but with the rate at which schools like pcom, lecom, and tuoro are adding branch campuses, and hence diluting some resources and attention away from the main campus, nycom is actually average size. Also I wish there was more electives in third and fourth year, but i heard they may institute this next year.

all for now.

Hey I don't know if this has been brought up b/c I didn't read all the posts, but the survey for was only completed by 4 students at NYCOM.... which I believe is one of the biggest DO schools, so yeah, I don't think anyone should take that survey very seriously unless more students start taking it.
