I had the option of neurology, IM, and FM (one program each).
Had a lot of soul searching to decide what I'd enjoy the most. I also had to think heavily about which program would be least like my initial program in terms of residency environment and was actually resident friendly and very comfortable and laid back but also ensured an excellent broad based training. I looked at which program had the happiest residents and where I wanted to live.
I decided the program I joined met most of the criteria. It just happened to also be a FM program. I'd decided that I enjoyed variety and FM provided it. I didn't want to wait for the match so I basically was looking at whatever was available and I knew fully well that many times these programs are often times as bad if not worse, but sometimes you find a diamond in the rough and I did just that. The neurology and IM program were excellent in name but just not what I was looking for.
I found that I loved outpatient medicine and I didn't mind inpatient medicine. I didn't feel the most comfortable with Peds and OB (I could certainly place an epidural in a pregnant woman in pain though lol), but having gone through the training program my comfort level has improved significantly. Will I be doing OB in practice? No, but it's nice to have the experience.
