Did I do the avatar right?

I found a site on the Net and downloaded an avatar to my desktop. From there, I went to "user cp" on Studentdoctor and chose "custom" avatar. I then chose the "browse" icon, found my desktop, clicked on the correct image (Gif) and clicked "submit modifications". I checked on line after posting a message and I still didn't see it! Does it take time or should it be instantaneous?
