Hey all, this is my first post here since its been difficult to find someone's experience in this situation and unsure if my worries about my screw up are warranted or not.

So, in my AMCAS personal statement and one of my most meaningful experiences I mentioned being a "first generation college student" and the difficulties I encountered navigating university and finding shadowing opportunities.

My mother earned an AA degree and my father never graduated high school, and until now I've always considered myself as a first-generation university student since my mother never attended a 4-year college. However, AMCAS disagrees and gave me a fat "No" under that portion of the application after verification.

Since I did state that I am a first-generation college student in my essays, will that screw me over?
The last thing I want is ADCOMS to think I am trying to deceive them.

You know the very beginning part of your AMCAS, where it says “other impactful statement” or whatever? To give yourself some peace of mind, if you can, just add a few sentences in explaining your reasoning like you did here. I think what you said makes a lot of sense.

For that section I did mention being a first gen student however, I used that section more for explaining how my past difficulties in life helped me preserver through the future challenges such as the challenges associated being a first gen college student. But again I said that I am a "first generation student" even though AMCAS definition doesn't define me as one.

What's more important is not the label but how it impacted you and inspired you down this path. If your discussion is coherent and clear, I don't think this will matter. Some may consider you first gen, others may not. I believe your parents' educational backgrounds will be listed on the application too so if adcom care they can form their own opinion there. But honestly I dont think it will be scrutinized this heavily.
