Hi Guys,

I've always thought that a pharm tech certication is the same as a license, but i have been seeing ppl mentioning pharm tech cert and license separately. So what exactly is a pharm tech license?

which one do companies usually require that you should have had when they do the hiring?would they favor ppl who have gotten their license over a pharm tech certificatioon?

depends on your state, some states require a state issued license, whereas others will accept simple PTCB certification. Usually, the PTCB certification is a prerequisite for licensure.

Example:

California requires you to be PTCB certified and pass a criminal background check before issuing you a license. OR, in lieu of PTCB certification, you could have completed a formal pharmacy technician program at a school.

Until I receive the state issued license, my PTCB certification is completely useless.

Other states don't require anything at all for you to be a pharmacy technician.

aww that sucks, if your pharm tech certificate is useless w/o license

so does it cost more? to go thru the whole license process

"Certification" just says that you passed a course/test/whatever; it's kind of a one-time thing.

"License" implies (to me) that it has to be renewed, probably involving CE credits or other hands-on stuff, or even just documentation that you're actually current in the field. I suspect a license renewal costs money, too.
