anything major that is different about the schools (aside from the locations, obviously)? has anyone interviewed at both?
I interviewed at both and there are SIGNIFICANT differences.... ill list them off for you...if anyone thinks I am wrong or has stuff to add...feel free to
First.... Curriculum
Touro Mare Island just recently changed its curriculum ( this year) so that the courses are more integrated..by this I mean, instead of having block exams every six weeks....you now have exams every week...this is in effort to make you continually study instead of cramming...also I think they combined virology and physiology so that you get both the viruses and the normal functions at one time...also I think pharmacology is more spread out so you learn drugs more relevant to what you are learning at that time...instead of learning a bunch of drugs at once...
This is good and bad depending on who you talk to and what your learning style is ..
Touro NY - They have exams a little more spaced out...but I do not believe it is strait block....just a bit more spread out.
Touro MI - Rotations are more spaced out and it is very likely you may be out of the Bay area for some rotations - This could be good or bad depending on how you see it...personally I DO NOT want to be out of my schools area for a majority of rotations due to the fact that I would have to be moving a lot and dealing with finding short term housing ...which would essentially be extended stay hotels
Touro NY - offers a plethora of rotations in the NYC area and are also expanding around the United States and possibly abroad - Touro MI does abroad rotations as well
Touro MI - has some dated facilities...and some new ones.... Touro NY has all brand new state of the art facilities.
Touro MI is located on an abandoned naval base (UGLY)....Touro NY is in Harlem near the apollo theater and Bill Clinton's office
Touro MI - offers a MPH program - Dual Degree... Touro NY is working on dual degrees but does not offer any yet
Those are the differences I can think of right now...if I have more ill list em
🙂
One more thing to note...I am not listing anything in order to hate on the school or pro another school...these are simply my opinions on most of them in terms of what I think...IE Touro-MI having an ugly campus. Both schools impressed me in terms of education and both seem to be very well organized. Neither is a bad school...but it depends on what you want out of the schools. They can offer two completely different Med School experiences...Especially 3rd and 4th year.
