Do the editions of medstudy differ significantly (e.g. between the 12th and 13th edition)?

I am wondering whether to wait for the 14th edition to be out in PGY2/3 before buying it....

Also, does anyone know when the new edition of Pocket Medicine is coming out (especially those from MGH 😉 )?

I bought mine intern year and also used it to study for the boards 3rd year and did fine. Medicine doesn't change in 3yrs, and they just make minor tweaks every year, probably to maximize sales. It's kind of pricey so probably worth it to use it for 3yrs.

The current version is only 2y old. Not sure when the next will be out but my old blue one is still just fine.

Thanks - yeah, its rather pricey, but I would like to start reading it from intern year (whenever I get some time). I guess I can always write any guideline changes to it as the residency progresses.

Thanks....I think it comes out every 4 years...if I have to go by the previous editions. This one is nearly 2.5 now...but I guess its a must-have in intern year, so I was thinking of buying it, unless one is around the corner.

On a related note, what are the outside limits on Tarascon and Sanford? (a 3 years old, 5 years old editions...how long do you hold on to those before the attending/upper level tells you "you may want to get a new one of those")?

A bit early to worry about ABIM, no? Medstudy is pretty good board review from what I've seen, but probably not the best learning tool.

Posting from another thread from about 2 years ago -

reading material i just finished residency and took the boards. i studied by reading medstudy and mksap questions and the boards were in general easier than the inservice.

after i finished studying, i wished i had been reading medstudy while as an intern. they are very easy to read and really tie concepts together well. of course i wouldn't use medstudy alone for a resource when taking care of patients, but just as a good overview of internal medicine.

You're telling this to someone who has already taken Step 3.

I haven't even taken Step 2.

Okay - just to get the attention away from the discussions on random NRMP listservs named after fruits and greek plants....

is medstudy better than mksap?

i believe the general consensus is...medstudy for text, mksap for questions. But people do either/both/neither and still pass the boards.

Those things still exist? Seriously, I used my Tarascon's for about 1 month as a 3rd year then got rid of it. Download Epocrates to your SmartPhone (the Android version was just released this week!) and use your hospital's antibiogram - or Hopkins ABX Guide online (free) or on your SmartPhone (pay...thanks Skyscape bastards) - and you're done.

If you really want to carry around a book that is so detailed as to be nearly useless, hunt down an ID fellow and ask where the stash of Sanford's is. The ID fellow's office at my hospital had a stack of ~50 of them when I rotated through a couple of years ago. I took one, used it for a week and then put it back. There's so much info crammed in there that it's nearly impossible to use IMHO.

There is a new edition of MGH Pocket medicine coming out in July. Do you think it is worth waiting for the new one and would the old one (2007) be good enough? I am thinking of just getting the old one as my internship starts mid-June.

Bump....also are you sure its out in June? Amazon says September, and by that time, I would be done with the first quarter of internship....

Huh, Amazon was showing me July earlier and now September.
