Hey. I thought it would be a great idea to get someone outside of my discipline to edit my personal statement in exchange for editing their personal statement.

I'm applying for med school, and would be open to editing anyone who isn't applying to med school's personal statement. Email me if you're interested:

Best,

Interesting. I wonder how different the PS is based on the field. It seems like it would be similar, except I'm not sure what I would write about with 100 hours of volunteer work or something (which is more the norm for pre-meds, though some certainly have much more). I think that's the main difference - amount of experience on average.

I feel like a lot of the things that vet admissions are looking to be addressed in personal statements don't really translate to human med. I guess it would work in the sense of reviewing overall organization and grammar, but not so sure about content.

I actually had bought a book which was part of the GRE package I sent out that gave examples of personal statements that got people into "health professionals" programs - most of them were for med schools and didn't really seem to fit the bill.

Although vet students usually apply with a huge quantity and variety of volunteer/vet work, I think the personal statements should be similar. I know similar threads have talked a lot about how your personal statement should not just be a story of all your animal/vet experiences because you shouldn't repeat in detail what is already in another section of your application. (or at least that is my opinion)

I think good vet personal statements focus more on the future, who you are as a person and what makes you different, what field you'd like to be in as a vet, what you can bring to the vet community, how you can influence scientific changes in the field of vet med etc.
I also think a good med school personal statement should focus on these things, but applied to human medicine.

I like the idea of switching editors from diff fields though!! I think it would be good for a non vet student to read our vet personal statements because I think some pre-vets have trouble detaching their "lovey emotional pet stories" from their personal statement. It is hard to realize that 99% of students feel this same way and that ad coms already know you probably feel this way and want to hear more than just that.

I'm also game to edit some pre-medder's PS. If I was applying this year I'd love to have a different discipline edit mine. Go for it guys! (and I'd be happy to edit a couple)
