Hey guys I was wondering which DO schools are considered top, middle, and lower tier in terms of competitiveness? I want to apply to a few schools at each tier to give myself a good spread. Obviously this could be very subjective but I'm sure there is some general idea of where each school lands. I think this could be very useful info for everyone 🙂. Thanks.

Formally there is no such thing as a tier system. Though many see DO schools as being in two lots, either as an old and established school or as a new one. The latter of which are usually the more competitive.

Though, in the end, a new school is better than no school, and one would be foolish to turn down any acceptance. I have noticed though, from the underdog thread etc., that when it comes down to it, it's a crap shoot. People get into places like DMU or KCUMB or KCOM and then get rejected from PNWU or SOMA or RVU. It happens.

OP is asking about competitiveness, not ranking.

I don't think a tier system is a good way to go as different schools emphasize different things (gpa, mcat, location, research, ECs, etc.). You can be easily accepted to certain competitive schools and rejected pre-interview at others, simple because each school is looking for something different.

If you did want to go by tiers for competitiveness, I'd calculate a LizzyM type score for each school, or somehow add GPA and MCAT numbers together (last year;s underdog thread had another formula) and go from there. I believe the CIB also shows how many applicants each school had compared to the accepters.

People always want something or someone to tell them they are better than someone else.

Cmon, it's DO applications. If you cant figure out which schools you're competitive for then you have other issues that need your attention.

Kinda depends what you're looking for. Everyone has different criteria when looking for a school. Want a good location with lots to do? Want a good board prep program? Nice weather? Great match rates?

Most schools will be better than their counterparts for at least one of these criteria and fall short in others. You're going to be a doctor no matter what you do, though..🙂

If you had an MDapps, this would be a whole lot easier. The best DO school is TCOM in Ft. Worth, TX. I live in Dallas by the way. 🙂

Exactly... the best DO school is that one that fits you the best, AND accepts you...
