I know that many veterinary schools look for the ideal student that can fulfill 4 or 5 different areas of medicine. Are wildlife and zoo medicine counted as the same category or viewed as separate? I noticed on the application that the category is listed as "wildlife/zoo."
Thanks!

I think they tend to get grouped together because they aren't super common areas to get involved in and they can go hand and hand. In the scheme of things I don't think it really matters. Some schools are going to prefer you have experience in many different areas, some are going to prefer you have tons of experience in your area of interest. I think if your zoo and wildlife experience is pretty different though, schools are going to view it as different types of experience. Just as I would imagine they would look at GP SA and specialty SA as giving variety.

I remember that University of Illinois' supplemental application required all of the applicants to check off which species they have experience with and to describe the experiences. Plus, the applicants had to rate how comfortable they were with each of the species listed.

I only had experience in small animal (3 years), zoo/aqarium (2 years), and livestock care through my major (Animal Science). I have been accepted to two schools so far. I say if zoo/wildlife is something you are interested in, you need to show it in your application! Go the extra mile to get that experience because it is not something that most students are exposed to before starting school (or even during school).
