So my situation is that I am waitlisted at a very fine fairly nearby university based psyD program that apparently offers a lot of aid and assistantships... And on the other hand I will likely be accepted at a fine freestanding program about 2,000 miles away which doesn't offer much aid (But the total price tag is not bad).

When I received the letter from the university program I immediately sent off a formal email to the contact in admissions expressing gratitude, interest, and offering questions about where I stand on the waitlist. It said it is "somewhat likely that students will be invited into the program from the list." She couldn't elaborate on where I stood or anything, but she did say I could contact her whenever to inquire about the process and that I could send in anything additional to my application file.

So...
a) Should I send in anything else, and What should that thing be?
--I was thinking a writing sample from a college essay I'm proud of, but they already have a 'writing sample' in the form of my essay.
--I'm also considering, slightly, sending in quality Jpegs of some of my paintings, since I am an artist and that was a decent section of my essay, how art relates to wanting to be a psychologist, etc.

b) When is a proper time to check back in for my status? April 5? I have no idea

c) Should I send in a hard copy of the letter I first sent her about 'thanks for waitlisting me' on superquality paper and signed?

d) Should I kick myself in the head because I'd rather be unconscious than fully aware of everything I might/should do to get into this program?

Thanks for any thoughts you have!

I would just keep sending emails periodically expressing your interest. Don't overdo it; but every few weeks, just send a quick email saying that you are letting them know of your continued interest. That's what I did at both schools that waitlisted me. I was hesitant at first because I was worried that they would think I was annoying or overeager.

The last email I sent was this past Saturday, and yesterday I received a very positive email response from one school and an acceptance (!) from another. 🙂

Also check the thread called "Being waitlisted/ an alternate" as there are a few of us in a similar position. Good luck!

Yeah, thanks, I did, and I posted in there too.
I seem to be one of the only ones who was invited to send in additional materials, at my discretion, and I don't yet know how to respond...
