So I walked into work a couple of hours ago and heard good(and bad) news from my supervisor. I will be promoted to a lucrative position. I'll be making much more money than I'm now. I work in Telecom/Networking division of a bank. Reason it's a bad news is because work hours for this position are not flexible and I've already registered for Spring 2010 classes. My current job is awesomely flexible. I can come to work anytime and leave anytime as long as I work 40 hours per week and that's how I finished most of pre-reqs for med school in Summer and Fall(in progress). I definitely do not want to drop classes as I'm getting ready to apply next year to med school and I can't afford to pass on this opportunity either. I am super confused 😕 and don't know what to do. Obviously, I'll make the final decision but I'd truly appreciate your comments.

If your dream is to apply next year you have to forgo the money, anyway if you plan on interviewing next year you need a flexible job for the days off that you will need. Did you take the MCAT? If not don't you need flexibility to study? Good Luck

Always negotiate. Tell them you'd love to take the position, but you have a class schedule already arranged. If you have the capacity to do the work, but not with an inflexible schedule, tell them that. Otherwise, thank them sincerely and turn them down.

If they don't budge on the hours, then you have to decide if you want to pursue your current career (which it sounds like you'll be leaving 20 months from now to start med school) or pursue your medical career. Forget about the extra money; if you delay matriculation one year, you are essentially forfeiting the difference between an attending's salary and your current salary.

IF you're going to make a lot more money now as you say then it might be beneficial to you to postpone your med school pursuits for a while. Continue living off of what you have been and bank the rest. That's what I'd do, but then I'm sort of a financial planning junkie. You might also find that you like doing this new job enough to offset your medical desires. Only you can say.

I walked away from my job of 3 years because of school....never looked back, never regretted it. It made me even more focused on my goal of becoming a doc.

I think the advice here all is spot on. I left a very well paying job, which if I had stayed for the 10 years it will have "cost" me to become a doctor, I most likely would have been making more money (and not have the debt). But, would I have been happy? I really don't think I would have, I certainly wasn't then.

Being in school this last year, in the middle of the application process now, going through a divorce partly over this, I'm still FAR more happy now.

Try to negotiate, and if not, decide on your future now. If medicine is what will make you happy, then there really isn't a dilemma...
