DNA synthesis: 5' to 3', so the parent strand is read from 3' to 5'.
mRNA synthesis: same as above

So, does this also mean that mRNA is read in the direction of 3' to 5', with the ribosome moving in towards the 5' end of the mRNA strand?

ribosome actually reads 5' to 3'. The way I remember this is by thinking about prokaryotes.

In prokaryotes transcription and translation happens simultaneously (since there is no nucleus). As you said, mRNA is synthesized 5 to 3, thus the 5 end is the loose one being the only end available for the ribosome to attach and start translating.
