I have a disability status (for clinical depression) at the financial aid office of my university. Do U.S. optometry schools ask if you have a disability at the interviews? What about on supplementary papers? I don't want to disclose my disability, but I'm afraid that I'll be held against for lying if they do ask.

If you're clinically depressed, to the point that you are claiming disability, you might want to give serious thought regarding your ability to not only start, but also continue in an OD program. Just being honest.

And I think the implication that anyone with clinical depression should reconsider their career goals solely based on their condition is rather offensive. I know plenty of friends with mood disorders that are successfully managing a post-graduate education.

As far as I recall, you shouldn't be required to disclose any condition, or really any health information that you decide is private. Even if they do ask and you decide not to tell them, that is your choice, though I would check with your university's financial aid office if they pass along the information about your disability status to other institutions (they shouldn't).

If he is medicated and has it under control, there is no actual reason that his depression will stop him.

The very fact that you are able to post something rationally here on top of the many studies you have accomplished proves that you are fully competent to outgrow the bad past. I would not disclose anything as far as the disability is concerned. Just my opinion.
