Hi,

I have been reading the forums for some time but have never posted. I was working through the application and came upon the disadvantaged status question and am not really sure how to answer it. I came to the US from Haiti at 18 years old during a period of political unrest, but my family was fairly comfortable in terms of food, water, and education--all of my necessities were met. Haiti is certainty an undeserved community and I did not have the resources of the average American student, but I do not want to misrepresent myself as a Restivek. I was hoping for some input.

If you are under impoverished/faced cultural persecution then you are SES disadvantaged (doesn't sound like you are). Your ethnicity determines URM status, which I'm assuming you are....?

It's heavily based on your parents' education level. The rubrick is very simple and unambiguous:

The SES Disadvantaged Indicator is one tool that medical schools can use to identify applicants who may come from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds and is intended to assist them in putting your application information in context as part of a holistic review process

This indicator is derived from information you provide about your parents’ and guardians’ occupation and education levels using the schema developed by the AAMC.
