Are there any students here that are/were disappointed with there summer rotation? I'm a P3 and my rotation is at a local hospital. I paid $1700 to lean on a wall 6 of the 8hrs I'm there. My preceptor is never there and when you ask any of the other pharmacist to do something, there is alway nothing to do(they have 13 techs)

Talk to your advisor. Get a new rotation.

Have you talked with your school about the situation? Can you be moved for the last part of your rotation?

Gablet, You will learn at Glendale that once you are in a rotation, you are stuck with it. I have heard of one person getting switched after rotation assignments, and she had to jump through hoops to do so. We do have a new person coming on board to be in charge of rotations, but I expect the rules to stay the same. Once assigned, you are stuck with it.

I would have been disappointed if I had to do a rotation during summer.

I've had a few pretty disappointing rotations too. I think rotations in general are just a mixed bag - you really don't know what you're gonna get. On my rotations where I stood around like sack of beans and had nothing to do I usually try to read up on some disease states and drug info...just to make myself feel better that I'm actually learning something.

At my school there was pretty much no way to get out of a rotation once you start it unless something outrageous happens.

How long is your rotation? All of ours are 4 weeks long, except for two 8 week required rotations in Adult Medicine and Ambulator Care.

I'd hate to be bored for a long rotation, but I think I could handle 4 weeks.

I suggest befriending one of the 13 techs and asking if you can "shadow" and help them out. I'm sure they would be flattered that you want their help and are willing to help them. There's no use wasting all those hours doing nothing. I also think setting up a meeting with your preceptor to discuss things is in order. A good rotation usually has specific tasks, assignments, training, and objectives for the intern. If your rotation doesn't have that structure then you and your preceptor need to sit down and put some structure into it. Don't let one bad rotation discourage you, and meanwhile, make the best of it. There's got to be something more constructive you can do than leaning against a wall.

My preceptor is the pharmacy director, who is always in his office. He told us on the first day that he was going to put us to "work" so we could get the field of hospital pharmacy. It's been four days since the start of the rotation and I've spoken to him maybe a total of 5 mins. When you ask the tech if they need help they always say that they are almost done or no they don't need any help. The pharmacists there don't really know what to do with us because they are not the preceptor. There are a total of 5 students there(4 P3s and 1 P4 and we are all doing the same thing. Next week my preceptor has the entire week off so I don't understand how he is going to grade us.

Wow, that sounds incredibly disorganized. I would definitely make sure your school knows about it so maybe they'll think twice about sending students there again. I just hope those pharmacists know they are doing their profession a disservice by their unwillingness to teach future pharmacists. I hope things get better. At my school, we get to evaluate preceptors (and they evaluate us). If you have this opportunity, make sure you give them a poor evaluation,

Don't be too discouraged. I know that members of my class were vocal if the rotation site sucked. And they didn't just complain to other students. They complained to those who actually can change/unassign the rotation site.

To Dgroulx, my rotations were 5 weeks long. So the boredom lasts a while.

Funny, some people woudl consider that a dream rotations
However, I do see ur point, I wanted to learn too. But if that's the case enjoy the time off and read on ur own. Best of luck.
