I am interested in finding out more about Disaster Medicine and what schools have fellowships in it. Anyone have any comments or info about it?

You may also want to PM Andy Kahn. He is at UTSW in dallas and when I interviewed there, they had just accepted thier first fellow for GEMS fellow (which was Goverment Emergency Medicine services) so its disaster with a bend towards goverment issues.

I don't know how its turning out but hte way Paul Pepe described it was very very intriguing and he is fairly well connected.

Hopkins has extensive international, disaster, and government-related EM fellowships. We care for the secret service as well as the Capitol police, and are invited four times per year to assist with secret service training, which is really pretty cool.

It's "doc with a gun".

One of our seniors will be one of the 2 GEMSS fellows this July. He had his choice of places (CONTOMS, weekly SWAT experience (including callouts - not just training), published in disaster literature), and said UT-SW was everything he wanted.

Our other senior going into disaster med, though, is going to Loma Linda. Go figure.

So are fellowships like this very highly sought after? I was not aware that this would include SWAT, Secret Service, and that kind of thing. I can see how this would be very, very popular for competitive senior residents.

UMass has an EMS/disaster medicine fellowship. 👍

UC Irvine and UC San Diego both have EMS fellowships now too....
If you're in the Southern California area, UC Irvine will be hosting a Disaster Medicine symposium with lecturers from its own department specialists as well as Dr. Paul Pepe (UT Southwestern) and Dr. Scott Lillibridge.
