Discouraging

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I didn't mean this one in particular i find the Pre-DO to be vary encouraging however Pre-Allo and the What are my chances? Just seem to be discouraging. It just seems to be people worrying about how they won't be accepeted with their high gpas and high mcats. or other pre-meds just other peoples numbers and telling them they won't be accepted. I just find it a bit discouraging sometimes

Anybody else think these forums are a bit discouraging sometimes?

Haha, yeah. During the application process there were quite a few threads on here that I avoided because they were bringing me down. If you are a borderline or underdog applicant (as I am/was), it can be really tough to read these discussions sometimes. Even the "underdog thread," I thought, had a lot of people in there with some pretty damn decent stats. I know it was never the intent of the participants in those threads, but sometimes it did feel like I was more on the outside looking in.

All in all though I have found this forum to be extremely beneficial to the application process. Reflecting on the past year or so, I honestly think I would have been worse off without it -- occasional discouragement and all.

id rather stab my face than meet any person from the pre-allo forum. It's like a big one-upper fest over there and completely immature. I cant stand it.

With that being said, the what are my chances thread is quite discouraging. I had just about the worst stats anyone could ever have and everyone told me i needed to do a SMP blah blah blah you have no chance. I applied to one school and got in. Don't listen to those immature "you must have an 85 MCAT and 4.9 GPA to get in med school" people. Keep on keepin on and you will be fine

I had a 86V.

Most people on the pre allo forum come here for the chance at an ego boost. Most don't receive it, but at the same time most of the people blathering on about how you won't get in aren't being very realistic.

It's a crapshoot and everybody knows it. If people spent more time putting together their own apps instead of worrying about others, maybe they'd be getting in?

I had a 86V.

Lol. Yea, but how were your EC's? 😉

OP, don't be discouraged. Check out the underdog thread and others like it. I can only take so much SDN as well.

Were all egotistical a**clowns, mainly due to the fact we sit on the internet all day and bicker about the same stuff that was discussed in a 5 page thread 4 days before. It keeps me coming back though 🙂🙂🙂🙂

4 days before? Stuff on this forum has been argued 4 years before!

if ur stats r higher than most ppl, then this forum is encouraging however if ur stats r lower than average, there might be some times when u'd be discouraged...

I wouldn't worry about anybody else, but yourself. I can tell you as a dentist, applying to DO school. I was accepted to Dental school with a good GPA, but less than stellar DAT (probably below the average of the school). I did fine in dental school and both board exams (90 percentile). If you can get to the interview, its all about the impression you leave.

Here, not as much actually no. Okay, yes, there are some no-life trolls on here like any other forum but OVERALL, OSTEOPATHIC=ONE HAPPY SUPPORTING FAMILY!!!!!!!! (^*^)

But, hahaha, I thought I was the only one who thought the pre-allo was dicouraging. They are very mean on there! I mean, wow, those are our future doctors? I just avoid those forums like the plague but I am glad they were mean. I wouldn't have found the osteopathic principle, which I love with a passion!

But if I were you, I won't listen to people here as much but yourself like Drgioiadds said. It's soooo much better bringing yourself up because even with steller stats, people will still bring you down because they feel that you may not have enough "clinical" exposure or something. People will try to FIND something about you to bring you down because they are comparing you to them. A lot of people get in with or without what people predict. People were really wrong about me and a lot of stuff they said, that I would be questioned during interview, was never questioned. People can be so wrong sometimes. Just bring your stats up the best you can or enough to get screened and TRY. Don't give up, you never know until you try and stop listening to people! That can really block your path!

I think that is due to the fact that people can have no life sometimes or just want to act all bad behind a computer screen, know they cannot argue a lot in real life because realistically, they can get in trouble by opening their big mouths all the time, lol!!! I betcha in addition a lot of those allo-path people are geeks and timid in real life.
Also, if you see post from years ago, just don't respond!

LOL!! Well said!!! I'm sorry, I am going to have to crown myself worst stats, before I moved to America, I had as low as a 2.37 GPA, but I managed to bring it up a lot. They said (in so many words) it was all my fault and I had zero chance with a 3.25. I took the MCAT, yes, I did crappy with a 28 but I was proud of that considering my situationand not having time to really study. I tried my hardest and worked my butt off I got sooo many interviews and acceptances. I avoided these forums a lot during my process!!! Sometimes you have to avoid looking on here! It will do you more GOOD than HARM because I feel, you are here for advice, encouragement, and guidance, you are not getting it here, then I rather avoid here anyways. I mean, as long as you don't see it, you will be fine. I got encouragement and guidance by people I wouldn't think would guide me too!! The most important thing is getting in because, your stats won't matter anyways when you get in. We are all in the same boat regardless of stats.

Oh, I hate that "Underdog thread". I stopped responding to it because of being accused of saying stuff I wasn't even implying! I was trying to encourage but whatever I said was switched around, lol!!!

I agree, I rather die than meet anyone in allopathic. They are tooo rude, and I've asked a simple question about Masters GPA (because I was told to do a crappy masters too and blah blah and I so did not want to waste my time) and I left saying "WHAT???!! Why are you talking to me like that!?" T_T In fact, even I was told I STILL WILL NOT be considered competitive if I were to get a 4.0 in masters because they expect you to get that and the people who were on the admissions committee bashed me on that for no reason. Wow, are they miserable or what????? Very immature!

But anyways, you will do great!!!Good luck and try your hardest!!! (^*^)

Pre osteo forum = one big happy family.

I agree.👍
I "love" it when users on pre-allo like to ask: "Will I get into ANY med school with my terrible GPA of 3.9 and even worse MCAT of 38T??!!!"😡 Of course overconfident fool!

this thread broke my combo. i was exclusively posting in 10 year old threads this week. because the only good thread is one started before tom brady had a career.

Hah, yeah, I love the threads from like 2001 that get bumped up. It just shows how well people use the search function!

Exactly!!! What's the point of that? Just to show everyone how qualified you are??? Of course you will get in and have a high chance, what makes you think you don't?

Yes, blame the fact that you can't hold a rational conversation on me. Instead of going into another thread and dropping a passive-aggressive comment, how about you act your age and try to hold a civil discussion in the original thread without going off on tangents or tirades 🙂

If you go back and reread my comments (carefully) you will see I said "I understand what you're getting at", regarding the encouragement you were giving (I'm all for encouragement!). All I was trying to show you was that it's wrong to say below average stats are "fine". Sure, it worked out for you and me (thankfully), but there are many others out there with stats similar to what you said are "fine" that will have to reapply if they want a seat in medical school.

Just to reiterate, I'm trying to be civil and have a discussion. You jumped to conclusions and got defensive.

as a future DO student that works at a top 15 MD school, I can honestly say I would hate to be in the mix with these 15 yr old looking gunners everywhere...

A few days ago one of the residents from Baylor College of Medicine was dismissed on the personel disliking basis. Mine residency program is across the street but I know that resident. He was really a good resident and I quess he was an IMG. It was really sad news for me as Baylor is notorious to kick their residents on personel disliking/ discrimination basis. I hope that the poor guy can find some thing and handle this worse situation. I was feeling very sorry for that guy.🙁

LOL, ever been to a med school interview? The worst.

actually, mine were quite civil. no douchetastic moments, and a few of us even went out to dinner afterwards.
