Discussing Obamacare/Health Policy in Your Med School Interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I agree that the most important thing when talking about policy in general is the have at least a basic understanding of some core concepts and terms.

I had an interviewee that claimed to be very interested in health policy, but when I asked him his opinion about a basic concept he didn't know how to answer. I don't expect applicant to know what things like single payer systems are, but if policy is an interest I would hope you can hold a conversation revolving around some of the more basic concepts. As long as you sound knowledgeable, whether or not I disagree with you makes no difference.

Just keep in mind that you're not going to find many conservatives at a lot of urban academic medical centers. (they were practically nonexistent at my school)

In the end, your ability to be articulate and well informed about the topic is going to be more important than your slant. Regardless of your politics, if you come in with an "I learned about Obamacare by watching CNN" level of knowledge, your interviewers are going to smell bullsh-t.
