Hello, everyone. I was dismissed from medical school for failure to meet technical standards and I am thinking of transferring to a big three school. My step one score is in the low 230s and I finished my third year of medical school. My goal is to match in psychiatry. I am worried about the dismissal on my record and it negatively impacting my eras application for psychiatry. Considering my history, am I wasting my time applying to the big three as a transfer student? Thanks

Will you be able transfer? More than likely. They are always happy to take your money down there. Will you match psychiatry? Very unlikely. On you ERAS application, you will already be at a disadvantage for being an IMG, then you add the fact that you have to explain why you transferred to the Caribbean in the first place (if you even get the chance to).

If you do go to the Caribbean, be comfortable with going EM, FM, IM, Peds in undesirable locations/IMG friendly programs.

Having a step one score says that you took it before 2022, but then say you finish 3rd year, but then got dismissed? Has there just been like 2-3 since being dismissed? I’m suspicious of someone who can make it through third year but then get dismissed, 4th year is cruise control so I’m wondering if the nature of the dismissal is professionalism issues. If it is, that makes your app even more DOA for most residencies.

Also, if it has been a couple of years since you were dismissed, I can’t imagine even a Caribbean school would give you credit for time done considering how much knowledge you would have lost in that time.

For psych, your chances are slim to none with a dismissal and applying as an IMG.

You would need to be a bit more specific about what "technical standards" you were unable to meet.
I was on health leave (my health leave was extended for two years as retaliation) and I was allegedly unable to meet any technical standards to return from my health leave. My doctor cleared me to return but the school retaliated against me and dismissed me for failure to meet technical standards. I’ve filed complaints. I should be back in school.

Get you a lawyer if you believe the school was wrong and hopefully they’ll let you come back. But avoid the Caribbean the best you can. Or maybe try contacting other MD/DO schools and see if they’d let you finish (might be very difficult).

I can't sugar coat this, your medical career is over.
