I really liked the Maryland program for a number of reasons. I have two concerns:

1) I know the theoretical issues relating to Div's as opposed to Dept's. That being said, does anyone know - specifically about UM - whether I should let this factor swing my vote away from this program?

2) I haven't seen resounding support for this program in the info out there. I'd like to know what concerns people have had about UM, in case I'm missing something. [Since I know there are folks on this forum get uptight about negative comments about programs, maybe anyone with good advice could PM me (if worried about public posting)?]

Thanks!

Do a search on the EM forums here, you'll find posts on UMD.

I rotated there as a student and actually ranked UMD #2 on my ROL. It was going to be #1 on my list but then I heard USF opened up a new EM program so I decided to come here. The training at UMD is great and I wouldn't hesitate to go there for training.

The division versus department isn't really an issue for me... at my program EM is part of the department of IM... but it doesn't affect our training or funding or budget at all... its a nonissue.

Q

Historically it may have been a problem but in today's EM world it really is a non-issue. Especially at UofM.

Let's get this straight... there's only one UM (UofM)... The University of Michigan!!!!

I really liked Maryland too. I thought they did a good job of answering the division vs. department question at the interview. I get the impression that it really doesn't matter at all. Very impressive program.
