Hi people, i have a question abt the DMD/MBA program at Temple for those of you out there who are either considering or are at the program currently. I am very interested, but I am just not sure if it will be right for me. Next year will be my second year at temple, and i actually ask the dr. lugo, he said it's possible to do it the end of the second year.

anybody currently in the program has advice for me??? i greatly appreciate it

btw, i have never taken any undergrad business class. i did look at the GMAT, and my opinion abt it is, i think i can do it, it's pretty interesting

thanks again

Well right now Im doing an MPH at the same time as the DMD.....its still an unofficial dual degree at the moment.....

I cant comment on the specifics of the MBA, but as far as the workload of doing two degrees at Temple, its definitely doable....but just realize that you need a TON of time management......

Also, you guys just dont realize how hard 2nd year is, especially the 2nd semester.....Im suprised that I was able to get by in both the dental and the MPH part, cause at times I thought it was not possible.

Just keep in mind that if you start it after your 2nd year, you wont be able to finish on time and will probably have to stay an extra year. If thats cool with you and you know you can manage your time properly and the workload, I'd say go for it.....why not, its a completely free MBA.

Why do you want to do an MBA? You didn't take any undergrad business classes; i'm assuming you didn't have a business job in between college in dental school. MBAs sound cool, but I really think it's an enormous waste of time for most dental students. Over 100,000 MBA degrees are handed out in the US every year - an MBA is nothing special these days. And what you learn in the program is useless if you don't have experience or a background in business. It won't help you manage your practice better. Plus, most of the MBA students I've talked to say the most important part of an MBA program is meeting your classmates who will be your future core base of business connections.

If you're interested in having a leadership position in managed dental care or something, you should graduate dental school, get out in the real world for a few years, then get the degree. You'll benefit a lot more from it.

Dental school is hard, like badvibes said. Concentrate on that first.

You didn't take any business class in college, so why the sudden interest now? Unless your goal is to go into managed care or be a dental school administrator, the MBA is worthless. Not to point out the obvious, but if you can just squeeze in an MBA at the end of the 2nd yr of dental school, that sounds like a pretty lightweight, weak MBA education.

I have to agree with chimpo on this one... my wife jsut finished her MBA and really I am not sure if it is going to help her one bit. I mean she did a great job and all but really an MBA anymore isnt what it used to be by the looks of it. I think that it will be important to have somone who is busness savvy in your practice once you get going but really you should jsut worry about dentistry.. besides there are always consultants that can come in and show you where you need to go with your practice.

Does anybody know what the rate is going to be for stafford loans. I hear its going up by 1.8% after july 1st. I am trying to decide whether or not I should start paying the interest now on the loan rather than paying after school?

I'm trying to fill out this 2 minute promissory note and it has been a big pain-in-the-butt. Does anyone have any positive/negative experiences with a lender? My default lender is set to Sovereign Bank. I read somewhere in one of the other posts that Tufts has some kind of deal with Citibank, does Temple have something similar?

The lenders listed are:
College Loan Corp/JPMCB As Tustee
Citizens Bank of Pennsylvania
Bank of America
Edamerica Inc
PNC Bank
Wachovia Education Finance
Sovereign Bank
Key Education Resources/Key Bank
Student Loan XPress
Citibank
Student Capital Corporation

And would it better to pay unsubsidized interest while I'm in school? Obviously, not to have interests on top of interests, but for taxes maybe? Thanks.

Looks like the rate will be 6.8%. So at 30,000 unsub were loooking at about another 2000 dollars in interest per year.

If one pays the interest in school are payments made monthly or yearly..

Just got a letter about parking and wanted the advice of students already at temple on which parking area I should shoot for.

Carlisle West Garage
Battersby Area
Amtrak Area

go for carlisle or battersby.
carlisle west is a 6-story garage that just opened up this year and it's about 2 blocks away from school.
battersby is right across the street from school but the parking spaces a bit tighter and it is an outdoor parking lot (snow in the winter?)

amtrak is a parking lot with no fences and it's many blocks away from school which means you'll have to ride a shuttle to get to school from the parking lot. inconvenient and ghetto.
