DMU and LECOM Rotations

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It is possible at both schools. For DMU some people say you move around a lot, but I've been told that you can do it. They also have some rotations in OH that you can stay at. Also, for LECOM, they have them all over the place, and it would be easy to stay somewhere. if you call the schools, they are usually happy to answer you questions, and if you have kids/wife or something like that, they say that they take it onto consideration and try to help you stay in one place

For DMU:

Your third year will be at a core site. These include (but are not limited to) Iowa, Michigan, and Ohio. Depending on the site, there may be quite a bit of driving involved, but you won't be traveling around a lot (as far as picking up and moving)

Fourth year, it's totally up to you and where you set up electives. I plan to move every month or two.

Do many people get to stay in Des Moines?

Do many people get to stay in Des Moines?

There's no "Des Moines" core site, it's called 'Central Iowa.' It definitely has the most available spots, I can't recall how many exactly. I think that chances are you will have to do some driving to hospitals roughly 45 minutes away or so..this is why the call it central Iowa. Most people end up getting their first choice, I believe it's over 90%.

We're not experts on the process yet though...talk to me in January/February and I will know the ins and outs!

Is it true you have to schedule your own rotations at LECOM?
I believe they set you up in groups, and you schedule it out amongst ourselves based on what sites you guys are at.

Will do.

Is it true you have to schedule your own rotations at LECOM?

There are certain CORE rotations at LECOM that have to be filled every rotation cycle. There is a list that you just pick and your rotation group leader submits the choices to the rotation office and they send the info to the sites.

Now, if you want to schedule your own rotations outside the rotation list then you have to set those up yourself.

You have the flexibility to do all pre-made rotations or do a mixture of your own elsewhere and some CORE. If you have a family (like I do) it is very easy to stay in Erie and do all your rotations without too much issue. There were 17 students in my rotation group so among those half wanted to leave and half wanted to stay put so it usually isn't a problem.

I did 3/4 of my rotations in Erie then did electives in Alaska, New Mexico, and Las Vegas since I had connections/family/friends so it was easy to set up. I did not have any issues from the rotations dept in doing this. You just have to plan ahead.

I just want to make sure, it is possible to do all of your rotations in the Erie area (or at least like 40 min away by driving)? Thanks.

Yes, no problem as long at your rotation group mates agree to let you. I never had an issue. I did all my third year rotations in Erie. There is Hamot hospital, Millcreek hospital, St. Vincent hospital, the VA hospital and Shriner's childrens hospital and plenty of local docs who take medical students on rotations. There is a huge network of possibilities.
