Hey guys,

I have upcoming interviews at DMU and SCPM. I know they are two of the more competitive schools. I have a .. Cumulative and .. Science GPA and a .. MCAT. Is that still going to be competitive if my interviews are in March? Will they have many seats open during mid-March?

Thanks

Both should have seats open. You'll get in to both programs as long as you aren't a total nut job. Good luck..

If I remember correctly, there were people getting accepted to both programs as late as May or even June of last year. And with your stats, as long as your not a weirdo...you'll get into both.

BTW don't listen to dtrack...I think all the snow in his ski trips has frozen his brain. Scholl is better. 😀

Both are excellent schools and you will get a great education at both. Some things to ask yourself while you are interviewing:

- Will I be comfortable here?
- Do I really want to live here or in the general area for the next 4 years?
- Ask about the class make-up at each school. I can't speak for DMU but Scholl has a wide variety of students from all different ethnic and academic backgrounds.
- And finally consider any other intangibles that are important to you and see which school is the best fit.

Good luck!

stats are fine...DMU 👍

also, if you're an attractive girl then you should definitely choose DMU

Scholl has more women. 46%* vs the 35%* at DMU. More is better therefore Scholl wins!

Note to the GF: If u are reading this, I am just pointing this out in good fun. I am happily taken and will not be taking advantage of the greater percentage of women at Scholl.

*Class of 2013.

I wouldn't worry about not finding intellectual equals at Scholl. Your 26 MCAT will fit right in with Scholl's 25 MCAT average. Keep in mind that this is higher than DMU's average. 😀

The real reason why dtrack wants you at DMU is cuz he needs a new boy toy. Airbud wasn't too happy with him posting some scantily clad private photos.:scared:

its about to get real up in here! dtrack and janv you two play nice...although dmu and scholl are close enough for a thunderdome showdown somewhere along the iowa/illinois border

winner takes pacpod

Hey guys,

I have upcoming interviews at DMU and SCPM. I know they are two of the more competitive schools. I have a 3.56 Cumulative and 3.74 Science GPA and a 26P MCAT. Is that still going to be competitive if my interviews are in March? Will they have many seats open during mid-March?

Thanks

Pacpod,

I too have interviews at DMU and SCPM in the next few weeks. Just wondering what you thought? I have been to DMU, I am from Iowa, but I haven't been to the Chicago school. Do the facilities compare to DMU? I have similar stats, 3.83 sGPA but a 23 MCAT. Were the interviews pretty relaxed; the typical questions, why that school, why podiatry? How many other students were there on those days? Any info that would prepare will help.

Thanks
Flake

Hi Flake7,

I recently interviewed at DMU on the 5th and it was a very relaxed interview, actually. We got there and the curriculum/financial aid was reviewed before the interview. The interview itself was (mine anyways) only roughly 20 minutes with the standard "why podiatry?" "why DMU?" and the rest seemed to be quite conversational. I really felt like they were just wanting to get to know me. Be sure to check out the interview feedback section here on SDN, it was a fantastic help. After the interview, you spend the afternoon with some 2nd year students getting lunch and touring the campus and that is even more laid back. I have yet to go to Chicago (interview is the 18th of March) but I can let you know after tho.

Hope that was of some help!

Thanks, I am more relaxed now. I appreciate it.

pacpod... they were in March.

I am debating between the two schools. I have been mostly examining the curriculum of each school. I notice that Scholl's is much more intense with many more classes and a year of medicine. I like this, but DMU's seems like less classes and not as intense. Both schools have excellent passing rates so both are obviously working well. Does anyone have an opinion on this? Something to add... When I visited DMU is seems like the concentrated more on the facilities than the curriculum, while Scholl was the opposite.

I like each school, but the only flaw I really do not like was Scholl's classroom(s). I do not like that there are no hard desk to write on or take notes. I really don't want to sit in class for a few hours at a time with nothing to lean on or write on. Did this bother anyone else?

One last thing is that I am pretty sure I saw a prostitute (she was definitely looking for some action) while driving out of town not too far away from campus (Scholl). Is this typical? Is it in a decent area? I thought it was until I saw this.

Any input or opinion would be appreciated.

I pretty much had the same feelings. I asked the podiatrist I shadowed (OCPM alum) and he said either one is good, didn't really have a strong pull either way. My decision on DMU actually came down to: tuition, cost of living, surrounding area and facilities. Yes, Scholl's curriculum is outright more vigorous, but to me, it didn't seem like the advantages were big enough to go for it. So basically it came down to money. Both are great schools, it was a really hard decision.

Good luck with your decision! 🙂

I really just think it is the one major lecture hall that doesn't have any desks. Depsite this, I saw that they had wooden attachments, that you can place in your lap, which will give you a hard surface to write on.

As for the area, it appears there is a mix of good and bad elements that surround Scholl. There isn't much to North Chicago. I think the town that Scholl resides in is kind of dumpy. Supposedly, though, there are surrounding towns that are REALLY nice and upscale. Some of the student ambassadors spoke to me about them during my interview. They are relatively close and have nice shopping areas, restuarants, and other social areas. Once you get here you will figure it out and learn to navigate away from areas that might make you feel uncomfortable.

If you need more explanation there are always Scholl P1 and P2s that float around here on SDN. Or you could do a search for more Scholl threads and PM the Scholl students who commented in those threads.

lots of classes in a setting you don't like (the classroom, not the hookers)?? sounds pretty easy to me. Obviously I am biased but when comparing DMU and Scholl, I don't think the curriculum is a big deal. It is one of the better DO schools, so that pretty much answers that. Plus, there has been stuff on here about the whole 2+2 transition. ask some current students their feelings on this.

Also, at DMU we have roughly 20 hours of class per week, and they are thinking about cutting 2 hours or so. Remember, more is not always better. Obviously DMU is doing fine when it comes to boards. Less is more. Plus not being able to access certain stuff off campus is a crock of sh**. You know how many hours I spent on campus this week? 45 minutes for a test this morning, and 2 hours for physical diagnosis earlier this week. The rest I have done from home.
