I'm a 3rd year DO student aiming to apply allo gas next year. I'm trying to get a good grasp on Step 1 and 2 vs the number of interview invites given that I'm a DO student. I know there isn't a solid correlation necessarily, but it would definitely help me get an idea of how many programs I may need to apply to. If anyone can share their experiences/scores/number of interviews/# of schools applied, that would help me TREMENDOUSLY. I've messaged a few people that posted in the 2013 interview thread and hope I get a response, but anything helps!

Have a good day!

"Im currently a ms4, and about to start applying in a couple weeks, but ive been in contact with around 15 DOs that matched allo gas within the last 2 cycles. Step 1 215-229 will get you a match, but maybe not at a fantastic program. 230-249 and you'll match at a solid mid tier. 250+ and youre only out of the harvards and yales, pretty much everything else is open."

I posted this before the application cycle started and it ended up being true for me. my scores were 237/257 and after applying to 50+ programs, I received about 25 invites. My list of interviews that i plan on attending is composed of 1 top tier, about 10 mid tiers, and 2 low tiers. I'm extremely happy with my list and would be extremely happy anywhere within my top 8.

So my assessment would be
215-229 - 70
230-249 - 50
250+ - 30

I just wanted to say that even with a 250+ many places will not even look at your application, not just harvard or yale. I see it first hand right now.

yes, there are definitely programs that wont take a look of your no matter what. But there are DOs at hopkins, Upenn, U of Washington, U of Chicago, etc... Based on people Ive talked to, you'll at least give yourself a chance at a couple top tiers with a 250+

I'm not too familiar with the ivy league programs, but I'd say this is pretty accurate from my observations. Sure, there are some places that won't interview DO's, but a solid step 1&2 score opens up doors and helps level the playing field to some extent.

Edit: BTW applying to 70 programs through ERAS is dirt cheap in the grand scheme of things, I'm not sure why many people skimp on the number of programs they apply to. It's much easier to respectfully turn down interviews you are unable to attend (early so other applicants can take your spot) than try to scrounge up interviews late in the season. A lot of the interview process and match comes down to luck, and you want to increase our odds of matching in all of the few factors you actually have control over.

Do you happen to know the names of programs they were invited to interview with? It'd be so helpful to know which places normally interview DO students with scores comparable to MD students they interview

Where did you end up matching?

A 250+ on both exams will open doors, but it isn't only the score that matters. Having a DO degree won't keep you from matching many places these days if you have the full package.

I'm only a second year, but I saw someone post that you have a good shot at matching anesthesia with a 215-229?

That depends on the spectrum on which you fall...225-229 sure, but less than 220 not so much. Also take into consideration most people that match with below avg step 1 have step 2 greater than avg (i.e 240's and above )....if your step 1 is less than 225, have plan B specialty for the match.
