I am thinking of applying to both MD and DO schools and wanted to know if anyone else that has done this can give me some advice...actually I'd appreciate advice from anyone. MD schools require that accepted students choose their school by May 15...correct? How long do D.O. schools usually give? thanks

The problem with DO schools is that a lot of them - mostly the private DO schools, require hefty deposits upon acceptance. Depending on when you get accepted, you will either be required to pay $1000 up front, and another $1000 near June, to hold your seat, or the entire thing if you're closer to the end of the application cycle.

TUCOM requires an upfront $2000 deposit within several weeks of acceptance, unless this has changed from the time I was applying.

So, holding multiple DO seats can be an expensive thing to do. I'm sure there are absolute deadlines like the MD schools, but the required deposits are the earliest thing you will encounter, and is frequently the decision point most people encounter.

I am having first hand experience with this as I'm applying to both.

The bulk of DO schools, I've found, require at least $1000 by December 15th, or within 30 days of your acceptance. As a stronger DO applicant and weaker MD applicant I foresaw myself getting some acceptances long before i'd hear back from an MD school and being out the money I put down on whichever DO school I got an acceptance to and liked the most, you know.

Luckily, there are SOME DO schools that are a bit more reasonable with their deposits. AZCOM's is paid in $500 deposits I believe so you'd only be out 500, not a thousand...This is also the case with DMU..OUCOM is nice as their first deposit is just 100, then another 500 isn't due until June 15th. There are, I'm sure, more schools like these but these are the ones I'm applying to so I'm familiar with them. Check out the school websites to find out what their specific policy is.

It is a bummer though, with having to put down so much money and potentially be out it completely if you later hear from another school, be it MD or DO that you want to go to more. The MD schools have much lower and later deposits, so don't worry about those.

CCOM's first deposit was $250. It was due sometime in December if accepted early. The second deposit of $750 was due by March 15th or so. I think the dates depend on when you acutally get accepted. Also they will refund $100 of your deposit if you withdraw after paying $1000.

if we place a deposit at a DO school and are awaiting acceptance from an MD school, are we required to withdraw ALL applications both MD and DO?

what was the deposit for western in pomona... the website just says that there is a deposit required. i already turned in my AMCAS and am working on the DO app now... is it even worth it to try and turn it in this early (or at all) since i probably wont be hearing from MDs until much later (im cali resident)?? there is no way i can afford to pay deposits multiple acceptances at that price... any advice whether i should hold off until next fall to see how my MD ones go or is it too risky to wait??

Western requires two deposits of $1000 each. Around December and March for those accepted early enough. They are non-refundable.

Why is it that DO schools do that? I've noticed it and wondered.

Is it so they don't have a bunch of students waiting on acceptances to MD and then bailing on them late?

It's 'cause they know that alot of the people they accept applied to MD schools and aren't gonna go to their school so they want to at least make some dough off them 🙂

I believe that most people that apply to DO school apply to both MD and DO schools and I also believe that most are more concerned with going to medical school and becoming a doctor than with either of the two philosophies. Some people use DO schools as a back-up to MD schools and other care less which they get into as long as they can afford it or whatever other personal reason there is. The DO school application service has no affiliation with the MD application service and so you can hold multiple acceptances with both, and with DO schools you can hold as many acceptances as you are willing to pay for right up to the first day of classes. However, it is better to release seats that you won’t keep earlier than later for the sake of your fellow applicants and for the sake of your bank account. UMDNJ holds the same rules and fees for all three of its medical schools which includes SOM so their deposit is only 100$ just like RWJ and NJ med but most of the other schools ask for thousands of dollars to hold a seat.
