Just recently decided to apply anesthesia. Haven't had any anesthesia rotations yet, and no anesthesia LORs, but have very strong LORs in other fields. Too late to set up any anesthesia rotations now. Any chance of matching? My Step 1 = 212. Say if I apply VERY broadly?

I am definitely interested in this as well. To my knowledge so far after cruising the posts on the SDN forums is to apply to >50 programs. It may be more money upfront but you can cancel interviews as they come and go the ones you want to. I did about average on step 1 and plan to do the same. Skip the elite programs as well i.e. hopkins, ucsf, mayo, cleveland clinic. If you really want it and are willing to move I have heard of people getting tons of interviews as DO's. Good luck and I'll for you and me when match time comes.

Frankly, it will likely be quite difficult for you. Aside from being an osteopathic medical student and having a slightly below average step 1 score, not having done a rotation in anesthesiology (and, as such, having no LORs written by anesthesiologists) is a significant concern. Are you sure its too late to arrange a rotation? Not only could it benefit your application, but it might also provide you with valuable insight as to whether or not this is really the right field for you. In any case, certainly apply very broadly (focus on less prestigious programs in less desirable areas) and hope for the best.

So what made you want to do anesthesia? I don't think it's impossible but you are coming in very late.

I've done a few gen surg rotations, and other rotations where we are in the OR frequently, so I've had a chance to talk to some of the gas guys, but haven't had a full rotation in it to get full exposure. So why I want to do it: I love the OR, but not the lifestyle of a general surgeon. Simple as that.

Far from it actually. Apart from both being in the OR, there is little in common between the various surgical fields and anesthesiology. Not only have you not had full exposure, sounds you really haven't had any real exposure to anesthesiology. If I were a program director (I'm not), I'd be very hesitant to consider someone in your position; simply too great a chance of you not being happy because you don't really know what you're getting into. Also, the lifestyle isn't as great as some might think. As I said before, if you can, do yourself a favor and set up an anesthesiology rotation pronto. If nothing else, it will give you some idea as to whether or not you like it.

I agree with what the previous posts say. If you are interested in anesthesiology do your best to set up a rotation. Keep in touch with the place you want to do a rotation because even if they're full now sometimes people cancel last minute and a spot opens up. If you find after doing a rotation that you really do like the field then apply. For someone coming late into the game it might be advisable for you to apply to a preliminary medicine or surgery year and get more experience and letters from anesthesiologists and then apply to an advanced spot in 2012. Also, you can do a rotation with a private practice anesthesiologist and get more insight into the field. That's what I did and honestly it was way more productive and fun than rotating at the university.

I just don't see what you'd be bringing to the table for a program. DO with below average board scores with no LOR's and not even a rotation in anesthesia. No demonstrated interest in the field. I don't want to sound harsh but i'd be more worried about the future of the field if a program was in a situation where they had to take a chance on you

I think it's because people assume the reputation of specific hospitals always matches the reputation/competitiveness of their residency programs.
