Just a quick question.

I'm aware of some place outside the US where an attending has to possess an MS and a PhD in order to qualify for an academic position. That means a Fellowship would not be enough for an academic position.

Is that the system in the US?
Is any extra qualification needed, apart from having completed residency, to get into academic medicine?

No

No need for a graduate degree to be in academic medicine. Some programs will look favorably on the graduate degree when making hiring decisions, but this is only one of many factors that are considered.

Residency is, of course necessary. Fellowship may also be necessary depending on your specialty and the academic position you are looking at.
