Hey guys,

So I retook the mcat on August 7th, and got my scores back last week. I scored a 25 (10-6-9)
I scored a 23 the first time back in May of this year. My gpa is 3.65

Rest of my application:

-150 hrs community service at the hospital
-100+ community service with
-150 hrs of shadowing a medical director
-social and community service director of Golden Key Honour Society
-Active in a Vietnamese organization where I've done around 200 hrs of community service over the last 4 years (the president of this organization has written me a letter of recommendation regarding my community service)
- I have two additional LOR's. One from the medical director whom I've shadowed and another one from my Physics professor (he is also a professor at Oxford University)
I am trilingual (Vietnamese, Dutch and English)

My question is, what are my chances of getting into a DO school? And what DO schools should I apply to?

good chances, just make sure to apply to enough schools.

suggest these-
LMU
Marian
Touro-NV
SOMA
DMU
KCOM
VCOM (any campus)
LECOM-E
WVSOM
ACOM
COMP-NW
NSU

I would also include Liberty COM, Rocky Vista, and William Carey since you have sub-par mcat scores. Make sure you know which schools require a DO LOR (like lecom and wvsom)

Hmm, that 6 in Verbal might get you screen out at some schools, Just make sure you call each school and ask if they screen any score below 7

Chances are best at the newest schools. Definitely do not apply to the Touros, CCOM, PCOM, KCUMB, DMU or AZCOM. I can't recommend LUCOM.

Yea, I was afraid of that too. However, I did include in my personal statement that English is my 3rd language. I was raised in a Vietnamese family but I was born in Holland, Europe. Would they be lenient towards this?

Being a fellow Vietnamese immigrant (got here when I was 16 y.o.), I can tell you that they do not give much sympathy. I called different schools to ask, explain my situation, most the school told me they want at least a 7 regardless, (Goro can give you more insights), some schools even insist on an 8 in Verbal. There were only a couple schools told me they do not mind a 6 (DeBusk is one, and Indiana is second) but because their rule apply to everyone, not just ESL student. But I did not call all DO schools, you may want to try to call them all to confirm; it takes only 5 mins to know if a school will definitely screen out your verbal score (save a lot of money each school)

Why would they? They don't need med students with poor reading comprehension. Not saying you do, just that I wouldn't expect it to be overlooked.

But, a 6 is miles better than a 5. Your MCAT is low, but you probably have a chance.

Also, you shadowed a medical director? How much of that involved exposure to patients? Might wanna shadow a DO for a few hours.

Thanks! Definitely looking into it

I only shadowed the medical director during hours where he was actually seeing patients. But yeah thanks for the heads up, definitely not expecting to be overlooked
