Hi all, long time lurker first time poster here.
I'm a double major in Electrical Engineering and Biochemistry. I'm in my 4th year of undergrad.

BCPM GPA = 3.2
Cum. GPA = 3.2
MCAT: 26Q
California resident

Extracurriculars:
Shadowing - 5 hours (will have some more by application time)
Emergency Room volunteer - 70 hours
Volunteer at blood draw lab: 140 hours
Volunteer at health clinic: 80 hours
Part time job for all of my undergraduate time, 4 years total (~10hrs/wk.)

I appreciate any advice, suggestions, etc. Thanks!

I think your stats will probably be fine for DO if you apply broadly. Definitely continue with your plan to add shadowing and do some non-medical volunteer work. Other than that, you could take some more upper level science classes to try to get your sGPA up, but that might not be necessary. Also, DO schools do not calculate math classes into the science GPA, so you may need to recalculate it and see if it helps or hurts you. Good luck!

Engineering is no joke lol I'm sure they will take that into account. You should be fine for DO anyway but make sure to apply early and broadly. Keep volunteering/shadowing and start getting those letters of rec!

Chances are OK.

Thanks for the replies. Bumping to see if anyone else has any thoughts. I've heard rumors of a god called Catalystik... 😛

Well they look into your course load too, biochemistry is intermediate and electrical engineering is pretty dang hard to a lot of people. You have above average shadowing and volunteering for a pre-med especially for having a part time job. I'd say you're even with a few MD applicants and above average in DO applicants. Good luck! 🙂

Thanks for the replies -- so I should apply this cycle then?

Too late for MD.
Sorry -- I meant this coming June. As opposed to doing a post-bacc or something. Do you think I should even apply MD at all? Thanks.

I'm never going to tell someone straight up no (unless maybe you're sub-2.75), but your numbers aren't strong for MD. If you decide you really want to apply MD, I'd advise you to use state/regional bias to your advantage when selecting schools.

Is this a joke?

Had to be a brain fart lol.

Oh ok, haha 😛 What do you think about my DO chances? Any specific school recommendations?

They're decent for DO.

It's hard to make recommendations for schools... I'm finding the process is such a crapshoot. If money is no object or you have the AACOMAS fee waiver, apply widely. Your numbers aren't far from mine and that's what I did. Two of the three schools I have IIs from as of now are schools I figured I barely had a chance at, and I wouldn't have applied to either of them if money was an issue.

If it is, things get a little harder...
