Do clubs in med school matter? I know there are benefits such as old test packets, etc., but do they help you get residencies at all? Does it help w/ networking?

just wondering...

The test packets, volunteer chances, and parties offered are the best benefit of a club during medical school. As for being beneficial for residency, many of the national clubs offer free trips to conferences at which there are often residency booths and lots of physicians to meet. I have found the clubs at NSU to be worth while.

Residencies only care if you were president of the club. Make sure to join the club for your specialty to show you have interest in it.

You do not have to be president for residencies to care. A CV of multiple club officer positions goes a long way. The test packets at Nova from SOMA are absolutely essential. You need these old tests in order to be prepared, but some courses like physio do not allow you to keep the old tests which stunk when you were trying to figure out what you missed.

At the same time, only join clubs that you are interested in. The fees start to add up, and look into what these clubs offer you. It does not help if there are annual conferences, and the club does not help you get your absence excused and do not help with the costs.

Actually, residencies prefer that you take a leadership role in one club---particularly the one in your specialty. If you are the secretary in a bunch of clubs, that doesn't mean jack. It just means you are trying to pad your resume'.

Um yeah. Or you could be like me and be the president of a club and a national board member for the same specialty's national student chapter and then decide you don't even want to go into that specialty! 😀

I don't think being in clubs help with residency much. Depending on the club, you could get some networking that may help. But the most important thing is to learn as much as possible during the first 2 years and don't become a tool.

And do well on the boards. 👍

I'm only on the surgical and EM club at my school. There are; however, several students who are in almost everything. Whatever.

I think that's how it goes for residencies, MD and DO.

A good club will organize speakers and perhaps trips associated with relevant residencies. Of course club leadership may get a chance to develop relationships with program directors but club events are great opportunities for any club member to get an early shot at networking.
