Do D-schools Know About SDN Accounts?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They may look at SDN from time to time but as to root out people via SDN. Come on! What are they the KGB?🙄 Unless you post something here that may give away who you are I doubt they will find out.

Let's say that Jammin Jimmy has an interview on Thursday at X school. People at X school can just look and see if they have any interviewees named Jimmy. If Jimmy gave out extra info like GPA and DAT scores on SDN it wouldn't be too hard to match up. :meanie:

I don't know. Would they bother with the hassle of sifting through a pile of applicants (even just interview pile) to match up with stats that they have to dig up among all the posts in SDN? No. Besides I don't think they take SDN seriously enough to base their decision on this site. There's too much gossip, sensationalism, and BS on this place to seriously let it influence a decision of that importance. Being careful on what is being posted is the safest way to go but schools should know better than to base decision on SDN.

You never know. They were once applicants like many of us. They could do a search of "dental forum" and find this one. From that just cruise through pre-dental for the heading "interview at ___" and see what names might pop up. Maybe none of them match and maybe some of them are like "JamminJimmy" with links to their pre-dents profile.

Imagine walking into an interview and being asked "I see you lied about your stats on predents.com..."

The gossip, BS and other stuff is probably EXACTLY what they are looking for. I wonder how many people used a screen name that matches a myspace/facebook profile.

Very good observation tinman BUT my real name isn't Jimmy or any version of it  (funny story), so yeah I guess the moral of this story is not to post anything on the internet that you don't want any regular joe reading, because they COULD easily match you based on some stats (GPA, DAT, hometown) or other info you've given out.

I bet there are dental school faculty that visit this site from time to time, some probably much more than others. While I don't think they come to SDN to specifically match people to their SDN account, it definitely is not hard to do so. That's why it's so important to watch what you say on here. It's not truly an anonymous forum afterall.

Along those same lines, I'm so amazed by what some people have on their facebook profiles. I have friends that are applying to grad/prof school that have a lot of racy pictures on their profile. While nothing illegal is going on in their pictures (at least I don't think so), it still reflects poorly on someone to see pictures of them doing a keg stand or dancing on a bar wearing next to nothing. Sure, they seem really cool to their friends, but I'm not sure how cool they seem to grad/prof school faculty.

I do remember going to a talk at which there were two representatives from Howard, one from the med school and one from Howard Dental. The one from the med school specifically said that she reads SDN monthly and she basically warned students not to believe everything you read on the forums. She didn't specifically say that she tracked down any SDNer's at the interviews and called them out on their falsehoods, but there's always that risk.

No doubt that they know about SDN, and some probably look through it occasionaly. But I seriously doubt they have the time or interest to play detective and match the huge pile of applications with SDN profiles. The admins that mentioned the site at my interviews gave me the impression they look at threads about their schools to see what the rumors are about them. At NYU the admin went on and on to dispell the rumor on SDN about high failure rates and at Temple the admin talked about all the negatives said on here about his school. If you chose a user name that was a dead give away for your real name, and they happened to look at it, then sure it could be used against you. But if your even slightly anonymous, they're not going to take the time necessary to gather all the various details in your posts that would give a clue as to who you are, and then compare that with their mountain of applications.

and if so, how?

They do know about it and they can use it. The internet is open to pretty much everyone who has a computer and a connection....

When I interviewed at a few schools they talked about SDN.

they for sure know about sdn. they only know who u r if u state that u interviewed there and are talking about the interview day. when i was at temple brian haun said that he checks sdn every once in a while and he was talking about this one guy that had just interviewed there. he said he knew who it was because of what he had written on sdn. he also said that guy never got accepted because he was rude to one of the other students interviewing their that day and he continued talking about the guy on sdn, so brian made sure that he wasn't going to be part of the temple class. so i guess only in a case like this they would know who u are.
