Do we need to retake classes with C-?

Yes you need to retake, that's not a passing grade.

come on, it's their first post...:meanie:

yes, they accept them. you can retake them if you'd like, but the first grade is still going to count towards your oGPA and sGPA in the end.

so you're gonna try and tell me that no one gets into dental school with C's on their transcripts...if so, then count me out!!

oh, and FYI, plenty of people get accepted with C's in prereq classes. i think its pretty standard for a grade of D or lower to be just cause to repeat the class, but i hardly think that a C in any class is a mandatory retake (generally speaking of course. i know someone is gonna try and say "this school requires this grade, and that school requires that grade", but you get the point - i hope).

bigstix- I'm not going to claim I know the requirements for every dental school, but I'm pretty darn sure that a C- does not count as a passing grade. I know people get C's (myself included) but the OP said a C-. I'm assuming he's talking about a prereq class that he needs credit for. If it's not a prereq, than yes, he doesn't have to retake (or have ever taken it for that matter).

Speaking from experience (in undergrad anyways) a C- is not passing. I know cause I have a few 🙄. Even before Dental School, your University wont accept it. They will however accept C's and higher.

to the OP, you're best bet in finding a definitive answer to your question would prob be just calling up the schools you're considering and ask them...

can we agree that's fair?

edit: i'm not on a +/- system so i guess that's where i'll pick and chose my battles as i have no idea how that works with schools not accepting a C- as opposed to a C

My English class syllabus said "the lowest passing grade for this course is a C-"
I am not answering your question but thats a fact.

GOOD LUCK

So a C is passing but a C- isn't? WTF? Like bigstix, I'm not on the +/- system either but that doesn't make too much sense to me.

if ur not on a +/- system and u dont know the correct answer, then no need to answer.👎. yea, the best thing to do is to call the schools directly and make sure. 🙂

Is a C passing then??? school has a +/- system

yes people do get in with Cs, including myself, but if u have C- in one of the required courses then it is to ur benefit to retake, cuz C- or lower are not passing grades (for most schools I believe).

Yep. According to Temple, and I'm sure at most other Universities, a C- ISN'T but a C IS (I know, I know, I said the same thing at first). HOWEVER, it also depends on which class the C- was received in. For instance, a C- in my major classes isn't considered passing while a C- in my core classes (classes that everyone are required to take such as english classes) is accepted.

I am a biology major, my roommate is an accounting major. If I take a biology course (since it is my major) and get a C-, I need to retake it to pass. BUT since science isn't his major, if he takes the same course to fulfill his science class core requirement, he is allowed to get the C- (since it ISN'T his major). Which makes sense because it really isn't important that he pass it all that well, he just needs to take a science course.

It is kind of confusing and what I am telling you applies to Temple's system. I am sure some school's might differ. You will know for a fact though whether or not your school allows you to pass with a C- because you will see whether or not you are allowed to take the class higher than it when you register. Freshman year I thought a C- was passing and that is just what I got in Gen Chem I. I signed up for Gen Chem II and was systematically removed from that class by Temple's computer system over Christmas break because of it (side note: I re-took it and got an A-. I think they count A-'s as passing 🙂)

Many schools specifically state that they do NOT accept any grades lower than a C. C- or below is not acceptable. You need to retake. I wonder though... for the dental schools that don't use plus/minus grades when considering the GPA, would a C- then be acceptable since that is a C without the minus? hahaha

LOL, SDN is right where you belong! Calm down, just because he or we are not on the +/- system doesn't mean we can't comment. Goodness, i'm learning on here just like everyone else.

I guess that's where I was confused. I figured that a C- for all intents and purposes would be like a C, and a D+ would then be failing. I guess not though, makes me glad i'm not on the +/- minus system!

u can comment, but u need to make sure that ur comment is valid, otherwise u could mess up someone's future by mentioning incorrect statements.

anyway, good luck.

Your best bet is to call the schools you're applying to and ask them whether or not they accept C-'s. It varies from school to school, but I recall that it's about 50:50 between those that do accept C-'s and those that do not. Someone mentioned that Temple does not accept C-'s, so I'll just add in that Columbia does accept them... I had a funny exchange with their dean of admissions on that note.... and keep in mind this all happened over the phone...

Me: Do you accept C-'s in pre-req coursework?
Dr. M: Yes... it's a passing grade, isn't it?
Me: Yes...
Dr. M: Whether or not you'll get in with those kinds of grades is a whole different story...
[awkward silence]
Dr. M: I didn't mean to be flip. I'm just being honest. You're going to need a good reason for that grade...
Me: Yeah...

I got an interview invite a couple weeks later... haha

most schools say they prefer C or better, some schools say they require C or better (e.g. Nova, LLU). just check with each school. to make up for it, either retake, slam that section of DATs, etc. you can always call the school and ask.

I hope people don't base important decisions off what a couple SDNites post on here. Probably not a good way plan your future.

Don't get me wrong however, I love this site and it serves a great purpose!

When it comes down to GPA, do the before and after grades get averaged for that course? I got a C in Calc 2 last quarter and am now retaking that class. Suppose I get an A this time, would the two average out as a B basically? I am new at this so I apologize if I sound like a newbie..

Yes to all above.

hi, im new to this as well so sorry if i sound repetative. I am struggling with the decision to retake a class. I got a C- in physics 1 and then a B+ in physics 2. All my prereq grades are pretty high but Im getting mixed suggestions about retaking that physics course. I really dont want to because physics isnt on the DAT but Im worried that when I start to apply to schools, I will find out that a school I really like doesnt accept the C-. Would you suggest retaking physics 1 this summer or just doing more upper level courses to increase my gpa. Sorry this is so long, its my first post haha.

Yes retake it if you can. Even if a school allows a C-, it will improve your application to show you went back and mastered the material. Physics is a prereq at nearly every school and it's part of your BCP average, so I think it's worthwhile to repeat.

Hi.. I contacted some dental schools and spoke to some people who just applied and still havent been able to get a solid answer. Most dental schools I asked said they dont have a retaking classes requirement for C- classes and one actually said to NOT retake a class (it looks bad they said?). Other people said since its a C- in physics 1 and since I got a B+ in physics 2 that it would be a waste of time. I know I already asked but does anyone who expierenced a similar situation have any advice? I am struggling here.

I think my situation is similar. I got a C- in Orgo Lab I, but a B in Orgo Lab II, so I am retaking Orgo Lab I. I figured, I don't want to limit the schools that will consider me just because of a C- that I got years ago. I am definitely applying to schools that do not accept anything lower than a C, so in my case, I have to retake it. I guess it depends on what schools you are applying to. I hope that helps.

I really don't see any schools (that I'm applying to atleast) saying on their site that a C- or lower is not accepted. My school gives out numerical grades and under some circumstances I received a 1.6 in chem (which is high enough to go on to the next class...i think a 1.6 is considered a "CD" in adsaas). Does anyone know any of the schools below that will not accept a 1.6 in a prereq? I did get a 21 on my GC part of DAT.

Arizona
Loma Linda
Pacific
USC
Howard
Boston
Tufts
Creighton
NYU
Case
Temple
UW

These schools I know pretty much require a C or better in prereqs:
Pittsburgh
Nova
LLU (someone mentioned this above so Im putting it here)

Please correct me if I'm wrong or add to my list.

Quick question for all of you that retook classes:

did you retake those classes at the same school you took them at the first time? My school doesn't allow that...

yeah, my school doesnt allow us to retake classes if we passed. Since i got a c- thats passing so I cant retake physics 1 here. I am going to call some schools tomorrow and ask because I have no clue what to do. A lot of people are telling me not to (Temple emailed me back saying dont, it looks bad) but we will see.
