I am sorry for asking such a stupid question, but I really don`t know. I am from Canada and here dentist make more. The earnings of physicians are capped by the government because the government pays their salaries. However, I thought that because medicine is privatised in the US, general physicians made more than dentists (general). No one ever said so, I just assumed. Does anyone know for sure. (Bye the way, I am talking about averages. I know that it`s all relative and doesn`t apply in every single case.)

so is this like the 100th thread made just in the last week regarding earnings?? Geez, you guys gotta give it a rest! All you need to know that you'll earn a good income as a dentist...you wont be a millionaire because remember that you'll have a huge debt to pay off...much more than other people (especially coming from Canada)...so although you might make more money than other people, you'll have a debt that they wont.....but if you play the game right, youll live comfortably...isnt that the most important thing? Stop worrying about money.

Too general a question to answer. Dental incomes within the same dental field tend to have much more variation than intrafield physician incomes. There are full-time general dentists in my area making 300k+ as well as full-time general dentists(usually working as an associate or for a chain) making 90-100k. A general dentist who is very skilled from a business standpoint, markets well, and has a good balance of hygenists and maybe even an associate or two can really make huge dollars.

OTOH, there are fields in medicine not requiring a fellowship where you can have no business acumen, no marketing skills, no people skills, etc and it would be hard to make less than 180-200k a year. So it's too general a question to answer and really depends on what kind of person were talking about.

my dentist told me that a graduating dentist working 3 days a week can expect at least 80K in Canada and 5 days a week, at least 125K.

Those are VERY reasonable numbers. Most people I know their first year make a little more than that, but that is an associate practice.

If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.

What does that mean bickle?

thats its too good to be true so dont bank on it unless you have some family connections

exactly....

Too bad, those numbers are perfectly legit for US dentists 😀

Even for a fresh graduate? Speed is money, and I doubt many graduates have the speed to make that kind of money fresh out of school (in any country).

Oh yeah, totally. 80-120k is the general range for associates fresh out of dental school.

sorry gavin, but an associate working 3 days a week fresh out of school is not going to make 80K....

On that part you are probably correct. Most associates aren't going to work 3 days a week. But for working 4 or 5 days a week, 80k would be a low starting point.
