I know that dermatology is one of the most competitive residencies to get into. I'm wondering if the DO derm residencies are any easier to get into than the allopathic residencies. I would prefer to stick with a DO residency in whichever field I choose. Heading into med school I'm considering derm, psych, and peds. But, who knows. I have been known to change my mind 😛 .

I haven't found a whole lot of useful statistics on this. You can check out the National Matching Service website at the following address http://www.natmatch.com/aoairp/index.htm

There are also some stats on the AOA website too.

Unlike the NRMP site, I couldn't find information like ranks/programs and number of applications.

However, it stands to reason that since DO residencies are only open to DOs and many DOs opt out of the DO match in favor of the NMRP match, you could have a better chance of matching into Derm than an MD candidate.

That was my thought too. I was just wondering if it was accurate. I would really like to do a DO residency if possible. I don't want to sit for both boards unless I absolutely have to.

In the past several years aprox 2-3 DOs per year have matched into allopathic derm out of about 260 positions per year. There are about 20 new openings yearly in DO derm programs. They are very highly sought after. As in allopathic derm having the right connections, grades, boards is important. An extensive discussion on this was done on board this several months ago so do a search for it.
