These outfits irritate me so much to wear it isnt even funny. I can't stand putting on ties and I hate having them around my neck (it's called the businessman's noose for a reason). and even fitted properly these outfits feel like clown suits. please tell me there's an alternative. I'd wear literally anything else including a speedo, a pink aloha shirt with hello kitties over it, you name it.

Just no suits please.

sounds like you shouldn't do medicine
because I don't like uncomfortable outfits when im doing awesome stuff? Sounds like a good reason to be a doctor. How about you become an engineer and engineer us doctors something more comfortable to wear? 😛

I'm pretty sure you have to wear scrubs, a surgical mask, and gloves while in the OR. But what do I know, I'm only a pre-med 😎

Suit no (except at Mayo). Ties yes.

Most of the older doctors I work with wear suits every day, but I don't think I've ever seen a resident wearing one.

sweet i think that's one of the perks of residency. 😛.

You should ask him-lol.

I'm just annoyed that med students have to wear ties at my school.....I don't have the energy to worry about attendings yet 😉

That's brutal. It's productive day for me if I put on something other than sweatpants. Gotta love streaming lecture.

for real...I'll have mandatory attendance at all lectures too. such is my burden 😉

All the best doctors wear jeans and a white t-shirt when they don't need scrubs. You know and I know it.

I can't see why you wouldn't want to. Dressing well and looking professional is the first step towards gaining respect in a professional work setting. Also, it will turn heads when you hit the bar after work. Trust me, you're going to like the way women look at you when you shed the t-shirt and sneakers and pop on business casual.

This is an admirable stance I suppose, but it's sort of undercut by all the threads you've made about how unfair standardized testing is, what should I say in this essay, etc.

I ask what I don't know so I can find out the right info and be confident. It's a logical progression bro

Business casual isn't special. Those jackasses trying to buy your grandma's old jewelry at a mall kiosk are in the same league as you. I draw the line at suit though, the suit is definitely a step up.

Of my current personal medical team

Neurologist : a dress shirt, no tie, but white coat - hospitalist/group practice
Surgeon : scrubs or dress shirt/tie/white coat - private practice
Endocrinologist (who is also an ob) : scrubs or dress shirt/tie but no white coat - private practice
Primary care doctor : Hawaiian shirt only (previous PCP wore dress shirt/tie but no white coat) - both were private practice

Most of the male doctors I have shadowed at least do dress shirt and tie during the week (half wore their coats and half did not), the female doctors are dressed nicely with or without a white coat. I was uncomfortable when the infectious disease doctor wore her coat in with patients. Otherwise I could not care less.

So I have seen everything. I appreciated the Hawaiian shirts.

If you really want to turn heads adorn a codpiece as well.

If you don't know how to dress well, I can see your view, but I see it as an excuse to wear a nicely fitted, and stylish suit. Being able to pull out some nice patterns on suits, getting some nice ass ties, some nice shoes as well like some wing tips, cap toes, monks, loafers, etc. I enjoy dressing well but it doesn't fit in well and looks overdressed in a college and even med school setting, but being a doctor of some sort gives you an amazing excuse to dress nicely.

Because dress clothes are ugly, uncomfortable, and archaic.

If you look ugly and archaic in dress clothes, you're wearing the wrong dress clothes. I personally love the chance to look sharp on a daily basis. Don't buy scratchy shirts, and wear comfortable walking shoes, like a nice pair of conservative Clarks, to avoid the awfulness of dress shoes.

If you really hate it, go into private practice and wear whatever you want, or do EM and wear scrubs all day.

I don't wear ties, or suits. Mainly dress shirt and pants, scrubs w/ hoodie, or a polo shirt.

I prefer not wearing my white coat, but depending on the service I'm on, I'll don one.

also, you shouldn't need a suit look professional and stylish. Usually, I'd just go raid Armani, versace, or Hugo Boss or something. comfortable stylish outfits, no suit required.

Stopped the tie bit a long time ago; now mostly Polo shirts, rarely dress shirt. My comfort is important in feeling good at work. I still wear the long white coat, as everyone else does here.

This is only because Americans dress so badly that owning anything that fits well is already incredibly stylish.

Also suits>everything else. If your suit is uncomfortable then it doesn't fit or it's a bad suit. Period.

Yep, sounds about right.

overpriced clothing can be pretty dope. Honestly, I could call the suit making dudes the clown suit makers and it'd be an accurate description imo.
