Doing some research, I noticed how few D.O. EM residencies there are in the country especially in the Southeast. Is there anything a D.O. student can do to get ahead of the game? Are the USMLE's a must to get into an allopathic residency? EM is my passion but i'm a little concerned with the lack of D.O. EM residincies. This might belong in the osteo forum, but you guys seem to know your stuff.

While I'm certainly not an expert, I think the majority of DOs training in EM do so in an allopathic program.

Can't help more than that, though.

Take care,
Jeff

I know of a good number of people, grads from my school and others, that landed good allo EM spots with the comlex (they had very good scores however...so i've heard)

I'll have to nail the Comlex then. Thanks guys.

No, not necessarily. You just have to be a good applicant.

What the hell is a good applicant? Someone who didn't bomb medical school, someone with less than three felonies, someone who can hold a conversation, and did decent on their rotations.

You are right, there are only a few DO EM residencies in the Southeast... closest to you is... probalby... well, Mt. Sinai in Miami, FL. Such is the way of the osteopathic graduate medical education.

But a decent DO can match in a decent MD EM program anyday.

Look at me!

Good Point. And a DO chief resident at that. Very nice!!

however, both nailing the comlex or considering the usmle wouldnt hurt, but that (usmle or not) is a whole 'nother can of worms.

I only took the comlex. Scored just above 50th percentile. 50th percentile in my class as well. Matched at my #1 allo program. There are a FEW decent D.O. EM residencies (do a search on these forums to find out which ones). Otherwise, I would look to Allopathic programs if you want good training in Emergency Medicine. D.O.s can easily match into these programs if you take the right strategy. Apply to a large number of programs (don't limit yourself to the SE US.) Attend many interviews. Rotate at your number one pick. You'll do fine. Good luck.
