So, I got acceptd to NYCOM and fun began 🙂

My Mom asked me if DOs are the same as MDs why 10 top doctors in NY are MDs only...I did not want to start arument with her, I replied something like ohh really give me 20 years and my name will be there 🙂 🙂 🙂

I told my friend I accepted to NYCOM, she goes like ohh DO...so u will be a veterenarian...I am like hmmmmm well we are all part of the animal kindom right? So I guess I am somewhat a veterenarian...and I explained her what a DO is 🙂

Anybody else has something funny to share?

When my mom told her PCP that I got into DO school, the doctor asked her to congratulate me. The doctor who is MD said there is no distinction between MD and DO, just the letters.

I told my mum that I had finally hopped off the fence and decided to apply next year.

She said, "My darling in gonna be an M.D."

I said, " No mummy, I'm going to apply to DO schools as they seem to fit what I'm about."

My daddy said, "What's a DO? Gwal me no wasting money on no foolish 'ting!"

I explained to them that DO=MD in the US. I showed them do-online.org and showed them a link about Barbara Ross-Lee.

A few days later my mum was at prayer meeting and I overheard her talking to her buddies, "Chile, my daughter is gonna be a doctor. She is geting an extra special medical degree the DO that only a small percentage of US medical students. They only pick mature students to get that degree!" 😛

Daddy told my uncle that I am considering a brand new school (DCOM) because I am ultra special and that because I will get a DO degree I will be prepared to be DEAN of a medical school in 15 years. My uncle called me and wondered if I wanted him to speak with the President of the College of the Bahamas and the Prime Minister and the Bishop about me being the DEAN of a new med school in the Bahamas :meanie:

Mind you, I haven't even hit "submit' on my application!

My parents are wonderful and really could care less as long as they get a cruise or two outta my doctor salary. They would brag about anything I did.

i told one of my friends that i was going to become a DO, and he was like "yeah i'm all for DOs. my eye doctor is one." i politely corrected him that his eye doctor is an OD haha. but he still thinks highly of DOs so i let his mistake slide. 🙂

Congrats on getting in.

It does get annoying to constantly explain the difference I must say

I never really explain the difference. Most people just ask me if I got into med school yet, and I say yes. When tehy ask where, I say NYCOM. These are all pretty much my parent's friends, so htey dont know much about medical school in general, and they quite honestly may not even care too much about where I'm going, they just feel they have to congratulate me. The closer friends of my parents, they know about DO's already, because they've gone on the appplication and interview journey along iwth me. Same thing for my friends.

LMAO! That is awesome! I am going to say that next time someone asks.

unless hes an opthalmologist ... in which he could be a DO ...

Congrats on getting in.

I just look at it with humor.

I know one MD surgeon from the one of the major hospitals in NY. He told me DO=MD 🙂 and that NYCOM students are good 🙂 He also told me he is very proud of me 🙂

I am of the "asian/pacific islander" race so 5/10 family friends are in medical school pursuing their m.d.
when i first started telling my parents about d.o. they didn't believe me and they almost thought it would be too good to be true.
so you can still prescribe medicine.... you get paid the same..... its easier to get in to these schools.... you are still called doctor..... As i answer yes to all these questions my parents really don't know what to say. honestly, i still don't think that they fully believe me.
Once i figure out where i'm going or whatnot i'll have a sit down with them and open up some web sites and print out literature so they see that yes, their son actually is going to be a doctor. He's not lying.

And yeah, it is pretty annoying to explain what exactly a d.o. is. From all of my experiences, unless you are talking to someone within the medical community, its almost like a lost cause. They just look at you in disbelief and are like, uhhh what is this kid talking about?

haha ive heard of this one ... "do schools are jack-in-a-doc schools" funny ****.

jack-in-a-doc or not ... doc is still in there.

What's so annoying about explaining the difference? You just say many years ago there used to be a difference in philosophies but today it's pretty much the same as an MD. End of story. You all make too big of a deal out of all this.

I created this post to share some funny stories 🙂 and not to talk about differences. 🙄

My favorite MD=DO story is when I was shadowing an oncologist in my hometown and noticed that most of the patient referrals and drug rep letters were to Dr. X, MD and not Dr. X, DO. I asked if that bothered him and he said when was he was a younger physician it did but now he just laughed and went on being the lead doctor at their practice. That solidified my choice in DO.

Nothing particular, but my aunt annoyed me once.

I was in the room when my mom said " ----my name ---- is going to a DO school"
my Aunt was like... "oh... really. Just like Dr. xx daughter who ONLY able to study DO."

I just smile and let go because she does not know anything. I know I gonna be a doctor and that's all that matter.

so i told my dad all about osteopathy and how i'm going to be a doctor with a D.O. degree. a week later he told me about a conversation he had with his friend. he told his friend that i was going to be a D.O. instead of a M.D. his friend asked, "how come she doesn't want to be a doctor anymore?" and my dad answered, "i do not know why she doesn't want to be a doctor."

i had to tell him about osteopathy all over again...this time i explained it in our language...

When I told my PCP about 👍 becoming a DO at NYCOM he was excited because he is a DO and also went to NYCOM!

so this weekend i was exposed to a DO who's finishing third year residency, married....and LEAD SINGER of a christian hip hop group. And they were AWESOME!!! I was just in awe. Not only are DOs great physicians, but they're cool and manage a zillion things at a time. More power to them!

Does anybody knows trauma or transplant surgeon who is a DO ( in New York)? I have a problem to find one (probably using wrong searches).

That's awesome! My parents had much of the same attitude when I was growing up. They might not have been able provide me with a lot in the way of material possessions, but their faith in me has proven invaluable. I am SURE my mom will say something similar to her friends if the occasion arises!

i've said that before in some other thread.
When a nurse at ER when i was volunteering last semester asked me where i was going to go to school I said i was all the way DO and will be applying to OSTEOpathic schools only. SHe responded :"Oh, i would never be able to do osteo...i am too skinny and it wouldn't be fun to crack backs etc."I didn't know if i was supposed to laugh or what...couse she was a nurse...the same nurse that 3 minutes ago was taking orders from a DO ER doctor:laugh:
Some ppl are just dumb and not too concentrated on details.
Same goes for the child life specialists at the peds unit i am volunteering right now. 3/4 of they have no idea what a DO is although 4 attendings are DOs...all they know is that this is a Dr.XX or Dr.YY
They do not really care what is after their name.
I shadow a cardiologist who is a DO and since i have been there i have never seen anyone ask about his degree. Except for one lady who was a mother of a DO and very proud of it...they had a little chat about schools etc. But never what is a DO kind of question.

I noticed that the best thing is just to say that you go to med school where you learn everything plus some extra stuff.
That way you don't get yourself into a crazy talk about DO vs. MD.

"Discharge status: Alive but without permission."

😕 ............. .....

So...as I got accepted to medical school some of my friends and family started bugging me with health related questions....such as:

"My shoulder hurts could you please take a look..."

"Why do you think I have a headache today...."

"What do you think is the best birth control pill..." ( I answered "no sex 100% works", friend got offended)

"Why do you think my period running a week early..."

"Since you are a future DO can you massage my back..."

How do you guys deal with those friends and family who assume that u already know everything. I tell ask your PCP....they get offended...

Get new friends. Seriously, if you do become a doc, you'll never get a moment's peace.
