Hi everyone,
I'm new and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what kind of chances do I have of getting into DO school if I have a 3.2 gpa(just got over a rough semester, but should go up after this one), 26 MCAT? I also work part time at a research lab, involved with several clubs, have volunteered for the past couple of years. I am planning to take the MCAT again. I mean, do I really have a chance, if I apply to all the DO schools, of getting in somewhere, anywhere? I know I don't have anything spectacular that stands out but it would be nice to know what I'm up against. 🙁
Because if I don't get in I don't know what my backup plan is going to be. Oh and also if I take summer courses and my gpa goes up after those can I send in another updated transcript for them to consider?

Well i think that an improvement in your MCAT would be good, but you do have a chance don't give up! I got into two DO schools with a 28 MCAT and a 3.1 GPA so all you need is a little pick me up in the MCAT department especially if you have good EC's and have done some volunteer work and have good LOR's. My advice would be to improve the MCAT and get your app in as early as possible.

Yes you definitely have a shot. Many people have gotten in with 21 and 22 Mcats to DO schools. Just as long as your ECs are good you should be fine especially if you apply to all DO schools.

You certainly have a chance. There are many posts where people have gotten in with similar scores. I would suggest that you visit www.mdapplicants.com. You can enter your GPA and MCAT scores and see what schools have accepted candidates with similar qualifications.

Yes go for it. I got in with the same gpa and mcat, but i do have my master's. I got interviewed at alsmost every school I applied to. =) God bless you!

My advice is that you need improvement in the confidence department. I think you have a good foundation and a higher MCAT may land you some interviews.

Do not feel intimidated by other applicants, they are not your competition when you talk one-on-one with your interviewer.

Despite how generic you may feel, you are a spectacular applicant because you want to become a doctor

By the way, you can always fall back on grad school, and then reapply. There's nothing wrong with a few extra letters after D.O.
That's what I did.

P.S. You will have to send that updated transcript because schools will be expecting grades for courses you list as "currently enrolled".

Yes you can get into a medical schhol with those stats. Bad semesters happen for alot of us. Make sure you read up about DO careers. Check out the stickies on the top of the Pre-DO page. They have great info about DO.

Good luck and I agree with BklynWill be confindent in yourself!!!!!!!!!

yea u will get in probablly... you best bet would actually be to focuz in on a couple of schools. know exactly what they are looking for/are good at... get to know a few profs or allumni from there and try to see if you can get some LORs outta them... that really looks good... and make sure ur ECs are pretty good... and leadership positions are great...

good luck

Your numbers are fine. I wouldn't suggest taking the MCAT again until you've tried to get in and fail. Don't retake classes unless you got a D or an F. AACOMAS will substitute the second grade (assuming you improved). Unless things have changed, AMCAS will not substitute grades, they will average both into your GPA.

Concentrate your efforts on improving your r?sum?. I had exactly the same stats as you. I took two years off to work and be with my family and I got in on my first round. If you are committed to medicine and prove that you are a responsible hardworking person, you shouldn't have a problem getting in.

When I applied, I was really reluctant. So I hesitated. My former pre-med advisor came to see me at the lab where I was working and hounded me until I applied. Within two months I had two interviews, two acceptances, and another dean of admissions calling me at home to get me to come interview. You will be fine. If you can replace any really bad grades, then do that, but don't go overboard. Confidence is the key.

When I interviewed at TUCOM, I was by far not the smartest person in the room (TUCOM does group interviews). The other applicants had better grades and better MCAT scores. They were all asked more probing questions. I was asked very simple questions, they asked me to expand on things that I told them in my application. Basically they had already made their decision to accept me despite the fact that some of the other people may have been more "numerically" qualified. Most schools look at the whole package, a 3.2 gpa and a 26 MCAT will get you in the door. Do the rest with charm.

peace

Nothing to be ashamed about with those numbers. A 26 MCAT is a competitive score for DO school. In fact, I wish I had that score! If you're serious about going DO, then I would have to say forget about taking the MCAT again. Work to finish raising that gpa as much as possible. Also, I didn't recall you mentioning anything about shadowing. Possibly consider shadowing a DO or two (unless you've already done it). In my opinion and maybe a lot of DO schools opinion, this is almost a must. They're going to want to know that you've taken the time to learn about osteopathy in a real life setting. For what it's worth, my ugrad gpa=3.2, science=3.6, mcat=24, shadow=2 DO's & 1 MD, LOR=DO, and several volunteer positions. With these stats I applied to 12 DO schools, received 12 secondaries, only sent back 9 sec's, interviewed at 1, interviews sched at 4 others....so 50+% ain't bad, but the true test will be if I get into at least one of these schools (fingers crossed). Good Luck!

Thank you all for the feedback and advice! This definitely helps put things in perspective. Best of luck in the future!🙂
