So, I've used the search function for this question and can't really seem to find any definitive answers, so I'll ask away.

I'm graduating in December 2011 and am trying to figure out if I need to take Calc I before then. I've already taken stats I and college alg, but have heard that calculus is "recommended." Should I take it over the summer or just apply without it? I know some schools require it, but most that I'm looking at don't.

So, I have the option to take it over the summer and would rather do that than take it in the Fall, if I *have* to take it. What do you guys think? To calc or not to calc? 😕

sounds like you don't want to take it. if the schools you want to apply to don't require it, then no point in taking it.

Like the poster above stated, if the schools you are applying to need it then take it. If not, I say do something you enjoy this summer.

most schools require calculus I, however only four schools require calc 2. those schools are 2 state schools (not sure which ones), harvard and uchicago?

I suggest you take calculus I

When looking through the list the only 3 I could come up with that require calc2 are:
1. Harvard
2. JHU
3. Washington University (MO)

That being said, there are a sizable amount of schools that require calc1. I would say go ahead and take it just because it opens a few more options.

But I am not sure if the schools that require calc specifically ask for "Calculus I". If they don't you may be able to substitute "Applied Calculus" for it.

calc is easy and interesting. Take it.

According to the latest edition of Medical School Admission Requirements only 20 medical schools out of 132 require calculus. (See page 10.) You should only take calculus if: 1) the schools, to which you'd apply, require it; or 2) you find math easy and would likely get an A.

Take Calc 1, Calc 2 and Stats. All three are good classes and the only issue I ever had with them is, not difficulty but tedious amounts of work. All three have lots of homework and quizes. Out of all of them the most difficult is calc 2. It has alot of long stupid algbra-like problems, that if one step gets messed up the whole problem is wrong. Stats is pretty simple and stright forward. Calc 1 is cake if you do your homework. All three are very useful in other classes and make thinking about problems in other subjects easier to figure out.

HMS and JHU no longer require calc 2. don't take it unless you have some other need or desire to.

so far as calc I goes, yes i think it's a good idea to take it. find the easiest prof and make the A over the summer. the reason i say this is that many bad ones will focus too much on the nittygritty math and derivations and such, and then pound people with poor support and badly written exams. you don't need to know how to crunch out an integral in med school. you should however understand what an integral means.
