Hey, was wondering whether some of you could give me input. I'm planning on applying broadly this cycle anyways to see if anything bites, but just wanted to hear from others on my potential chances at any MD schools.
cGPA: 3.52
sGPA: 3.30
Biochemistry/History Double Major
MCAT: 28S (11V, 7P, 10B)
(This was the second time I took the MCAT, the first time I got 27S (9V, 8P, 10B)

I have a good number of EC's as well including research, shadowing, hospice work, among others. I was able to fill in the 15 slots for EC's on the AMCAS. Other than that I have 5 letters of rec (2 from sciences, 1 from history, 1 from research, 1 from shadowing), and I've spend a while working on my personal statement. I'm planning on submitting right on June 5th, as my application is all ready.

Thanks!

are you URM? what state of residency?

GPA is kinda low, and MCAT is "average" i would say you had a decent shot at DO, but MD may be kind of a stretch, but applying early and broadly will give you the best shot

I'm not a URM, and I am a CA resident. Yea I figured MD would be a stretch but not impossible, so I've planned to apply to a lot of schools very early!

Thanks for your reply.

Not impossible but highly improbable. You have no IS school effectively. Good luck and I hope to see that I am wrong. Are you applying DO as well?

GPA is low, specifically science GPA. The sub-9 scores are also going to count against you. 28/29 overall is low as well.

Schools will be trying to decide whether you have the "academic ability" to succeed in medical school and on board exams.

(above is mainly for MD, for DO your stats are more in-line with the averages)

If you are going to apply, definitely have a good rest of your application, apply early, and apply broadly.

Good luck.

GPA is low, MCAT is low plus you retook it and barely did any better. You actually did worse in a section the second time around.

I did research with an MD/PhD who is on his school's ADCOM and one of the things he stressed to me was quality over quantity for ECs. One of the things he looks at is whether or not the student is a "joiner." In other words, just because you filled all 15 slots does not mean they are quality activities or will help you at all in the process. As an example, I think I have pretty good ECs, but I only have 7 slots filled and one of those is a full-time clinical job. Three are in leadership (one clinical, two non-clinical) roles, one is research, one is shadowing (3 MDs, 2 DOs, all in different locations and specialties, but all under one entry), and another is clinical volunteering. A total of 564 shadowing hours (I spent an entire summer shadowing one of the MDs because I thought we needed a ton of hours). 400 or so volunteering, about 240 doing research, and 16 months at my job. One of the sites I volunteered at all throughout college and am restarting now 2 years later.

You aren't a URM, your GPA is low, your MCAT is low and shows little improvement from the first time you took it. You won't be getting any IS help, so I doubt you will definitely need to apply early and broadly. Good luck, but don't hold your breath for MD.

A 3.5/28 is competitive for DO schools though.
