Here are my stats:

science gpa: 3.0
overall gpa: 3.2
MCAT: 25
current school: UCLA
major: MIMG (microbiology, immunology, and molecular genetics)
extracurriculars: 3 month internship at great pharm company; volunteering experiences, lab work (not wet lab but dry lab work: analysis of data/bioinformatics), shadowing experience

Do I have a chance in AUC or SGU?

Of course you do. Why not apply DO though? Get your sGPA up a little bit via grade replacement and you could get in.

Thanks edgerock24. In my med school pre requisites I have mostly B and C grades. I wonder if that could be a problem getting in either AUC of SGU. In my last 2 final years major courses I got mostly A and B grades and that is how I brought my GPA to 3.2. Any further insight will be helpful.

Definitely no problem getting into SGU, can't speak for the others. I know many students with worse stats down here. Make sure you've exhausted all possible routes to get into a US school, and make sure you've investigated the relevant residency placement rates and trends from the last few years before coming to the Caribbean, though.

Thanks again for very helpful advice.

If I may ask Ben
What year are you in ?

Have you finally got in ?

SGU reported avg gpa is 3.4 and mcat is 27. But I do believe that with grade replacement you can get into SGU. You just need to remember, getting into med school is hard, and staying in med school is harder. Because an avg is an avg, does not mean that you cannot get in. There are always people lower and higher getting into a school, that is why it is an avg. I grad from UCD and I am applying to SGU, and a few low ranking MD schools. But that being said, I know how tough the UCs can be. I transferred in and as a transfer student I saw my pears lose focus, grades dropped from a 4.0 (community college) to (2.0 or lower). Just keep on pursuing your dream, don't stop! I would apply to DO school, but I have yet to acquire a DO letter of rec. But I have had friends gone through post-bac, and get into UCLA med school, coming with a gpa of 2.8, and acquiring a 3.9 upon graduating from post bac and then scoring a 36 on the mcat.
Because I messed up in the past, and I fixed my ways when I attended UCD, I was fortunate to correct my ways. However my overall GPA is not that great, and my MCAT score is a little lower than a 30. That being said, you need to focus, never give up on your passion. Just push through until you get into a med school, and your next task will be to survive the cut throat environment.

Hello there! This is my first time posting to this thread and I'm still fairly new to SDN. I am set to take my MCAT May 31st and am praying for at least a 30. With that being said I have applied to AUC with a 3.2-overall GPA , not quite sure how to calculate my science GPA seeing as I took a few classes again to the reinforce material. I currently work as a phlebotomist and therefore have some patient care experience. My letters of rec are decently strong... I just wanted to see if AUC could be within reach. In college I was a RA and obtained a stem cell internship. Any thoughts/feedback would be really helpful!

If your sGPA is 3.0+ and you can score 24+ in the MCAT, you are in. My friend got into AUC with a 3.1 c/sGPA and less than 24 MCAT

A lot of this will be contingent on your MCAT score. If you rock-out a 33 (or higher), this may change the playing field for you considerably.

Good luck and study hard!

Thanks! 🙂 I'm definitely trying. I would love to get into school in the US if I could, but I know that's all dependent on my MCAT score as well. Take it in a week and am freakin out! 🙂 Either way med school is med school. It's what you make of it once given the opportunity
