Hello, my stats are 3.4 gpa, only 23 mcat. I will have 200 hours of volunteering in the er by summer. I have shadowed an emergency room physician for thirty hours. I am a teacher of special education and have been for eight years. I struggle with a serious mental illness for which I am medicated. I want to be a psychiatrist. I signed up to take the new mcat in April. I hope I can do better, but if I can't, how do I sound? I am absolutely not picky about where I go. I know I will be lucky to get in anywhere. Thank you!

A lot of DO programs have a minimum of a 24-25 MCAT score. It's going to be tough for you to be a competitive candidate BUT osteopathic schools do look at the candidate as a whole rather than just their academic credits. I wouldn't say that you have no chance but I do think that re-taking the MCATs would be beneficial. Your personal statement may stick out and there are stories of people getting into medical schools with low scores but I would say, for your best chance, retake the MCATs.

100% agree. Your best chances are with the newest DO schools. Forget the NY and CA Touros, PCOM, KCUMB, Western, CCOM and AZCOM.

And don't attempt this path unless your psychiatrist and/or therapist are on board with this. Medical school is a furnace and I've seen it break healthy students.
