1.I am interested in applying to a D.O medical school, however my GPA is not very good;(its a 3.0).........but if I do well on the MCAT,would I hve a realistic shot of getting in anywhere??I do have research experience at both an academic insitution (LSU Health Science Center) and in industry as well (for a bio-tech research firm). Plus I do have volunteer experience, and I am going to start shadowing a DO very soon.

2. I have noticed that most of the DO schools application deadlines are not until feb-march range, so would I be safe to apply towards the end of December after I finish my fall semester??

1) I'm not an ADCOM member anywhere, and I've never met you. Your stats are just that; who you are plays a good role in decision-making time as well. I give you a big *shrug* about getting in.

2) Now, I *do* know about applying later in the cycle, and I strongly advise against it: get it started ASAP!! I'll repeat that another way: get your application in quickly and have everything checked, completed and waiting on your MCAT score. Go here: https://aacomas.aacom.org/

If you need help in deciding schools, ask in another post about the schools towards which you even have a SLIGHT inclination.. and do this AFTER you search the forum for previous posts about the schools. Go to the AACOM website and check out the schools there: http://www.aacom.org/colleges/

This should keep you busy. Applying as early as you can is the best policy.

hi, i think i may have replied to you on a similar thread in the pre allopathic forum. what i basically said was, people with scores lower than yours have gotten into MD schools, DO schools, any kind of school, so you're best bet is to apply to the widest variety of places you can. but i agree with drifting sun-- DO NOT wait. waiting to apply will never help. the earlier the better, regardless of what your grades are. i know someone who waited til after the fall semester to apply, got interviews knowing he was going on the waitlist because the class was full, and did end up getting accepted-- the first day of class. he had about 24 hrs to get his crap together and move half way across the country. pm me if you want more specifics!

There's always a chance!!!!

Do what the above posters have said... apply early in the cycle to a wide variety of schools and kill your interview. It will have a lot to do with your acceptance.

Best of luck to you.

Hihi!

Someone on another thread on here got an interview to COMP with a 3.1 cumGPA - so it's definately possible. However, apply as early as possible! If you apply too late, you might just be setting yourself up for waitlists, or worse...

Getting an acceptance is possible, BUT when an applicant has a low mark somewhere on his application, that means everything else needs to be the best it can be. Hopefully you will get a good MCAT.

HOWEVER, that said, I would not wait until very late in the application cycle. Then your odds are much lower. I would apply now and let the schools know you are taking courses and what those courses are. Unless you get all A's your GPA will more than likely not move up very far. It is amazing how long it can take to raise a GPA.

So apply now and don't kill your chances by waiting till the end of this year. Good luck.
