I am an IMG woman in my early 50s. I have been in America for 15+ years but did not get US medical license because of my husband. Now, we have divorced and I think about starting career again.

If I study for a year to pass USMLE 1 and 2, is it impossible to get a residency? I am open to any field.

Everything is possibe if you have the will to do it! Try to take a prep course...it will get you in touch with current medicine/students that will help you. I admit, that it is not easy....but it is still doable.

You have not practiced in the US, which on it's own is a big obstacle, and you have not practiced in 15+ years so your medical knowledge will be lacking. I would think you might have to go back to medical school to get a residency at this point. I think that you may find that passing your boards may be very difficult without formal instruction again. Then, if you you do get a residency, can you handle the strain? I'm in residency now and in my mid 20's and I am exausted. I don't want to discourage but you are really pretty much starting at step one if you want to practice again, and it will be very challeging.

don't be discouraged. there are many people who have been able to get a US residency after being away from medicine for a long time. its hard but certainly not impossible. i definetely don't think u need to go back to med school. your best bet would be to sign up for a kaplan course for step 1. also if u go to http://www.prep4usmle.com/ u will find many stories of succesfull moms who have aced their exams after having been away for quite some time.

I didn't finish my medschool yet, so I don't know exactly what it takes but I don't see that you need to go back to medschool..
any way wanted to tell you that I am so impressed with your courage and determination ....sure it is hard and need lot lot of work but seems you are capable to do it
wish you the best of 👍 :luck: luck
